Top 20 Wine Songs

I adore wine and have been writing about wine for over ten years. These are my top 20 wine songs of all time! Be sure to let me know if you think other songs deserve to be on this list, and I'll definitely give thought to it!

You Can't Always Get What You Want

by the Rolling Stones
"I saw her today at a reception,
a glass of wine in her hand.
I knew she would meet her connection -
at her feet was her footloose man."
-- I saw the Rolling Stones in concert in 2008, they're still quite good! This seems to be relating to drugs, that the woman in question was waiting to meet a connection to do a drug buy. Apparently the later part of the song is about methodone and the woman could be Marianne Faithfull who was hooked on heavy drugs at the time.

Mississippi Queen

by Mountain
"You know she was a dancer,
She moved better on wine."
-- I think we all move better once we've drunk some wine!

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

by Billy Joel
"A bottle of white, a bottle of red,
Perhaps a bottle of rosť instead.
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place"

The Way

by Fastball
"They drank up the wine, and they got to talking
they now had more important things to say."
-- I love this song! But are they saying that they could only talk about important stuff while drunk?

Tiny Bubbles

by Don Ho
The entire song is about Champagne :)

by Peter, Paul, and Mary
"Old Stewball was a race horse and I wish he were mine,
he never drank water he always drank wine..."
-- I was lucky enough to interview Mary before she passed away - she was a delightful woman!

Low Places

by Garth Brooks
"And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of Champagne
And I toasted you "
-- I think I'd be a little nervous if my new husband's ex showed up at our wedding party unannounced!

Livin' La Vida Loca

by Ricky Martin
"She never drinks the water, makes you order French Champagne"
-- isn't "French Champange" redundant? :) :)

Lady Marmalade

by Christina Aguilera etc.
"boy drank all that magnolia wine"
"we drink wine with diamonds in the glass"

Joy to the World

by Three Dog Night
"Jeremiah was a bull frog.
Was a good friend of mine.
Never understood a single word he said,
but he always had some mighty fine wine."

Pride and Joy

by Stevie Ray Vaughan
"Well I love my baby like the finest wine
Stick with her until the end of time"

All Along the Watchtower

by Bob Dylan
"Businessmen, they drink my wine, ploughmen dig my earth"
-- Is this a good thing, if businessmen drink your wine?

Spill the Wine

by War
"Spill the wine, and take that pearl ..."
This song is so fascinating that I have an entire page on it!
Spill the Wine Lyric Meaning

by Looking Glass
"And there's a girl, in this harbor town
And she works, laying whiskey down
They say "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whiskey and wine."
-- Not at the same time, I hope!! :)

Cracklin' Rosie

by Neil Diamond
"Cracklin' Rosie, you're a store-bought woman
You make me sing like a guitar hummin'"
--The lyrics don't explicitly mention wine but this is all about drinking a cheap blush wine

Honky Cat

by Elton John
"Living in the city ain't where it's at
It's like trying to find gold in a silver mine
It's like trying to drink whisky from a bottle of wine"
-- wait, doesn't that just mean you pour the whiskey into the wine bottle? That sounds easy to me! It's like the traditional 'cheat' of people pouring a cheap wine into a fancy wine bottle to impress the guests. I do love this song though! It's definitely a dancing song :)

You're Sixteen

by Johnny Burnette
"You come in all peaches and cream, lips like strawberry wine.
You're sixteen, you're beautiful, and you're mine."
-- Ah, to be young and in love ...

Red, Red Wine

by UB40 and Bob Marley, lyrics and melody by Neil Diamond
"Red, red wine it make me feel so fine ..."
-- Ah but what type of red wine is so lovely? It's hard to resist this delightful song which is all about wine.

Killer Queen

by Queen
"She keeps Moet et Chandon in a pretty cabinet.
'Let them eat cake,' she says, just like Marie Antoinette."
-- Moet et Chandon is a brand of Champagne. Intriguingly because it's a pair of names, one Dutch, one French, it's pronounced as a mixture. The MOET part is pronounded non-French, as Moh-Et, while the Chandon part is pronounced French, as in Shahn-Dohn. Again, the lyrics in this are just so fascinating that I adore it - and it leads in with the Champagne reference!

Hotel California

by the Eagles
"Please bring me my wine, he said 'We haven't had that spirit here since 1969'"

Then later on in the song:

"Mirrors on the ceiling, the Pink Champagne on Ice,
and she said, 'We are all just prisoners here of our own device.'"
-- shouldn't that be devices? :) I love this song in general, and wine is so intertwined in it and its symbolism that it's my top wine song of all time.
