Osprey's Dominion Vineyards, Long Island
Osprey's Dominion Vineyards has both tasty wines and a fantastic musical line-up. Just about any weekend you visit, something will be going on to enjoy. This both can add to the fun and also make the place very crowded!
The live Jazz playing when we visited was quite nice, but it meant we had to wait and eventually push our way to the bar to have a tasting. The pink-tile tasting room and covered patio in back were both full of people enjoying the music and wines. The pourers had a smile, but were running back and forth much to talk or even comment much on what they were pouring for you.
The photos you see below were taken during a rare break in the mob so you could see the room.
The 99 Reserve Chardonnay was smooth and creamy, with flavors of spice and vanilla. The 2000 Pinot Noir was juicy, with medium tannins and a gentle spice flavor. I found it a bit effervescent.
On to the wines that you paid per the glass for (which added another layer of complexity in the pouring madness). The 98 Meritage was rich and spicy, with full mouth feel, juicy flavor and a long finish. This was really impressive - each drink brought a different burst of spice in the mouth. The Ice Wine was made by Sauvignon Blanc, picked in late October. It was medium body with light pear flavors.
They violated one of my pet peeves by calling their sparkling wine a "Champagne", even though only Champagne, France can make that drink. It was strange that they did that, since they took the time (and paid the money) to have their Bordeaux blend called a Meritage. Maybe the US has to invent its own name for sparkling wines, too, to finally rid us of the wrong-named sparklers.
If you visit here, be sure to check their event calendar first!
