Alsace Wine Information

Lenz Winery
Long Island, New York

Visit Date: June 2000

Our fourth stop after lunch on our recent Winery trip on Long Island was at Lenz Winery, located in Peconic. Lenz is a smaller sized winery, with nearly 70 acres planted. It is a comfortable place to visit, with friendly staff and a black dog which greets all visitors warmly.

We began with the 1994 Cuvee ($29.99), which was very bubbly, toasty, and light. It's 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, resting on the lees for four years or more.

On to the two Chardonnays. First, the steel fermented 1997 "White Label" Chardonnay ($9.99). This had a light aroma, and fresh, fruity flavors. It went through malolactic fermentation. The 1996 "Gold Label" Chardonnay ($24.99) is also malolactically fermented, and is aged in oak. It has more intense fruit flavors.

Next the 1997 Gewurztraminer ($11.99). This is done in an Alsacian style, with a gentle aroma and smooth flavor. It has light hints of tea and roses.

On to the reds!

The 1998 Merlot Reserve ($16.99) is their entry Merlot, an easy drinking wine to enjoy while their other Merlots are aging. It has a great aroma, fruity and slightly tannic. The 1997 Vineyard Selection Merlot ($24.99) is also light, but is crisp and fruity, a gentle wine with slight tannins.

Our final wine was the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon ($29.99). This should reach its peak in about ten years, so don't drink it all now! It is currently round and fruity, with rich flavors and tannins.
