Bedell Cellars, Long Island
Dateline: 06/20/00
![]() | Our second stop after lunch on our recent Winery trip on Long Island was at Bedell Cellars, located in Chutchogue. The building is a graceful combination of rustic wood and lovely stained glass. The tasting room is cozy, with vines and beams, and friendly staff. |
We began with the 1998 Gewurztraminer - spicy and fruity, this had a good, long finish. The 1998 Viognier was light and fruity.
![]() Bill Thompson | The 1996 Chardonnay Silver is fermented in stainless steel, and has a smooth, fruity and crisp flavor. In contract, the 1996 Chardonnay Reserve is oaky and buttery, with a nice cream finish. |
The Main Road Red is a blend of Merlot and Mareshal Foch. It's a light, easy drinking wine, great for picnics. The 1996 Merlot was light, fruity and smoky. The 1997 Merlot reserve was richer, with a similar fruity and smoky flavor. The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon is bright, with a fruity, light tannic flavor.
The 1995 Cupola is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot. This was awarded a 90 by the Wine Spectator for its tannic, cigar box, full bodied flavor. The 1997 Cupola is a slightly different blend - 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot. This was also tannic, with a fruity flavor.
The Eis is a cryowine of 95% riesling and 5% gewurztraminer. It was smooth, with apricot and peach flavors. The Raspberry, created from concentrate, is fruity, tart and rich with a very full flavor. Not sweet and syrupy, this is a treat for those who love raspberry.
