Wineries -
Brotherhood Winery

On a sunny Sunday in New York, we decided to take the "long way home" from Ossining to our home in Massachusetts. Along the route was the Brotherhood Winery, "oldest continuous winery in the US". Apparently they were allowed to operate during prohibition by making religious-use wines!

The complex is quite impressive - it is done in an "old log cabin buildings" style - with a walking street with various stores along it. There is an open-air cafeteria next to the store. It was all very clean, well kept and pretty.

Brotherhood is quite a large winery, making many traditional wines along with many specialty wines and "champagne-style" wines. You can try five wines to taste for free. First I tried a Pinot Noir, which was very smooth and tasty. The same can be said for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Both were "good for the type". I was more interested in some of the unique wines they offered, though, so we tried those next.

The Ruby Port was absolutely delicious! Quite a powerful yet smooth drink, with an assortment of flavors in it. They also sell a pair of sherries. The most delicious wine was yet to come, however. They sell a Ginseng Red and a Ginseng XO, both created for the Chinese market. As far as they know, they are the only makers of Ginseng wine in the US. Both were incredibly tasty! We made sure to get many bottles of both in the assortment we brought back home with us.
