Freemark Abbey Winery

Freemark Abbey had the honor of being the only winery which had a red and white wine poured at the historic 1976 Paris Tasting. It was also the oldest winery present that day. The vineyards were originally planted in 1875, and the first winery was created by Josephine Marlin Tychson. She was in fact the first woman to run a winery in California. While the winery shut down for Prohibition, it was back in operation in the late 30s as Freemark Abbey. The winery has changed hands many times since then and in 2001 was bought by The Legacy Estate Group.

The winery's focus has also changed over the years, from Zinfandel to Italian varietals to French varietals. The current focus is on Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay and Riesling. In addition to their estate wines, Freemark Abbey also brings in grapes from the Boche Vineyards (near Grgich Hills), Sycamore Vineyards (near Bella Oaks), and Red Barn Ranch (by Caymus).
