I agree that they are not the best thing, but by law I have to do it.

Well since I'm still doing the little ones schooling, I picked up some workbooks from the store that were recommended by some other homeschooling moms.
Also, I'm doing Eclectic/Relaxed Homeschooling so I'm taking a little bit of everything of all the homeschooling methods. I'm also going to get some Wiccan lessons in it too as I want them to learn about our faith as well.
I think it's great though that I do have those options. I'm not sure if we need to do standardized testing. I'm going to have to check the hslda website to find out.

Mine has always been a mix and match kinda thing. There are so many free worksheets online. Schoolexpress.com is a great website. You can even get free coloring pages, puzzles and mazes. I dont know if you have ever heard of pookapages.com? Great Wicca website that has print outs for children. Covers all of our celebrations with recipes and craft ideas. You should check it out. Barnes and Noble gives a 10% discount if you show them your homeschool card. So do some of the arts and craft stores. Just ask them. Some Zoos let you in at a discount or for free if you go during a school day/hours. If you are setting up a field trip, always ask if they offer a discount to homeschoolers. They may say yes and save you some money.
One suggestion if you dont mind. Dont let the clock determine your schedule. Do what is fun and works for your life. My husband works night shift and sleeps late in the day. So I let the kids spend time with him during the day and teach after he goes to work in the evening. It works for us.
Sometimes we shop at Walmart at 3am in the morning or spend the day outside collecting bugs and looking them up in a book to see what they are(science class!). The grocery store is a great time to teach math(so is cooking time), find books that have movies that go with them, read the book out loud during the week before bed and then make a movie night on the weekend(or your night off). I guess that was more than one suggestion, so I'll go now!
Sorry, one more...large white erase board to hang on the wall!

Oh that's just awful! But not uncommon with schools. I know the school my two were in got rid of art, music and PE because they were low on funds. And this year they removed recess. So the kids would just be sitting inside the building all day.
Let me ask you Charlett, how did you know when to move on to the next grade level? My daughter had surgery on her ear and went back to school after she felt better (about 2 1/2 weeks) with a note from the doctor saying I couldn't do PE, and the PE teacher STILL had her do it. That same note had consisted of not pushing the garbage can after lunch for people to throw their garbage scraps at her. STILL the teachers made her to do it..

... Not letting your kids socialize on a daily basis, just like putting them through Jesus camp, borders on child abuse. Yowo, my boys were home educated and enjoyed / enjoy plenty of socialisation. School made them so ill that they were in no fit state to socialise. Same with friends' children. If parents are home-schooling for bad reasons, with negative motives, causing their children to suffer, then that is bad, and they deserve to be criticised, but you shouldn't condemn people, based on your own incorrect assumptions.

I think that certain kids, would not do well with homeschooling at all. And there are kids that can't handle anything other than private schooling. I am a person that needed public school, I wouldn't have done as well any other way. And I think that Darkness' (Sorry, I don't know anyone's actual name) children will be getting exactly what they need.
Learning is something that differs from person to person, and as such, different circumstances are needed. Darkness listen to her kids when they spoke, did her research and practice runs, and I think her and her family will succeed far greater than she imagines because she gave thought, effort and time into making sure that this really was what is best for them.
I hope everything works out beautifully. Good luck and lots of adventures Darkness and family!
