It is a special learning center. Before he became so advanced (with me schooling him during the summer)he was said to have infantile autism. By the time I helped him, he became far beyond his years. As I knew what made him interested, I focused on teaching him that way.

Because of that, the school said he was an "advanced" child and in order to stay in the center I would have to pay since he was no longer a special needs child. And they wouldn't move him to Kindergarten because they don't skip grades here any longer.

And I agree. I love when people think they know what's best for YOUR children!

I was paying $500 a month in a private catholic school
for my daughter to get an education.
I don't think my daughter wants to go to the public schools out here.
The kids would beat my daughter up to death.

I was paying for xxxx.
I was paying for nothing happy.
I was paying for a child to get depressed and give up on school and life.
I was paying for my child to learn, but she learned very wrong!

All that I was paying for, 4 years, turned out to be a waste of money.
I'm glad my daughter is in a better place now!
At a safe, loving family home.

NOOO.
They never beat her up.
The kids out here are vicious, territorial, and that bully-beat-up fights.

If I put her in our local public school, she would go through hell.

In NC where I live the school systems are so overcrowded. They are short on teachers and way under funded. When my daughter was in the 5th grade she was unable to go to the bathroom all day. Her classroom was outside in a temporary trailer because of too many students. She had one teacher who could not leave the classroom to walk my daughter to the bathroom but at the same time the trailer was far enough away from the school that the teacher couldnt let her go by herself. My youngest daughter had trouble with her diabetes and had to eat every few hours but in kindergarden her class did not get to eat lunch (2pm) until right before they came home. She would get sick and throw up and have to be sent home. She wasnt allowed to eat a snack in front of the rest of the class, so she ended up getting sick everyday.
It is sad that our public school system is so bad. But we really enjoy homeschooling. Sadly I will be done with it in a few years. I will miss it. My youngest told me not to worry about missing it because one day I would have grandchildren and then I can teach them.

Darkness, I wish you the best. I think you will love it!

Wow Charlett thats a shame. Your children had to endure so much...just to be "educated"

Thank god you took matters in to your hands. Your little ones health was really bad as a result of the classes. I could never tech in those conditions...its horrible.

Oh that's just awful! But not uncommon with schools. I know the school my two were in got rid of art, music and PE because they were low on funds. And this year they removed recess. So the kids would just be sitting inside the building all day.

Let me ask you Charlett, how did you know when to move on to the next grade level?

I think that moving them to the next grade level can be a personal choice. In NC we are required to do standardized testing every year. If they do well on the test then you can move them forward. If you feel they need extra time on a certain subject then just keep them back in that subject and move them forward in the others. That is the benefit of homeschooling. You can take the time in the areas they are weakest in. My children have always been great in math so even though they were say in the 7th grade in most of their subjects, their math would be 9th grade. You can mix and match depending on what your child needs.

What programs/books are you using?

Just gonna interject here: standardized tests are the worst thing the school systems since they banned dodgeball.
