Yesterday when I was cleaning Pips' cage, I took out the bottom and saw several...maybe 4 long flight feathers. It's just her in the cage now, so they all had to come from her. she is missing the 2 long flights on one side. No broken feathers or anything and upon examining they looked like they came out clean. She has looked scruffy to me for the past couple of weeks anyway.
Thanks

Can the stress of being moved to a new home and loosing 17 room mates LOL cause my birds to go into an early moult. They look a little fluffy at times. Noticed a few flight feathers in the cage also.

well it will certainly cause stress just the moving but i think loosing ...how many...17 room mates is that a typo OMG lol...well that was stress to begin with for the bird and it will now seem like a culture shock but will end up being calming once the shock wears off ...

stress like with humans can really do funky things...how old is your bird this will help to answer the question more but...being from maine and im in ma...this gorgeous winter we have had and now even more warming temps ..well throw that in the pot and yes id say MAYBE there is a good chance of a MAJOR moult going on here ...again how old is the bird please...

diet can affect this too..and if we need to talk about that we can much later...

tonight im whupped and will not be signing in and out like i usually do and have the feeling my head will be out before it even hits the pillow tonight...

Hi A friend of mine had 21 parakeets and 2 cockatiels .She got majorly sick and her parents came to take her back to Conn. She had the parakeets in 2 cages. I took them and found homes for all but the 4 i wanted to keep. So I am not sure how old they are. no stripes on their heads. All look healthy. One has a broken beak but is eating well. He manages it himself by grinding it down. But they look fluffy at times and have found a few flight feathers on the ground outside the cages. No Avain vets around here so cannot have him checked out. I currently have 2 in each cage but am looking for 2 more cages to keep them in to make training easier.
I feed them seeds they refuse pellets and fresh romaine and carrots.

those must have been big cages to have more than 10 birds per cage! Were they aviaries? They would have to be.
I'm like you, I am hoping I will have better luck with one bird per cage in the taming process. I hate to do it but I might even move one to another room so he or she can focus only on me for a bit, then maybe switch. But not sure if that will help.
For now I can have my hand in the cage and Chirp will step up to my finger pretty good and Pips will step right up to a perch. Keeping them in cages for now 'till their flights are in which will be harder on me than them probably! smile
We have no avian vets here either.

no the cages were average size. she has a love for animals and used to have them in an avarie in another house but when she bought this one she changed to 18 by 18 cages. They were definitely crowded.Unfortunately I still have 2 per cage but looking for 2 more cages .I will keep them in them until they are better trained and then move them back into cages.

kathy i see you got your logging in fixed ...if not contact a ADMIN...

i dont think carol your birds are as healthy as you think with the overcrowding they were in...you say they are fluffy and losing feathers this could be due to illness and poor diet as well...i dont know cant say only a AVIAN vet can let ya know for sure...

http://www.aav.org/association/index.php?content=activeMembersList

http://www.localvets.com/

here is that other site for you to locate also by zip code

http://www.aav.org/search/index.php

check thru those sites thoroughly to find avain vets...

smile

the first site has another link where you enter your zip code to find more so poke thru it to find that... laugh
