We went to the pet store today to go look... and ended up buying Bud some new treats and a new toy! He loves it and has been playing with it for the past hour lol! Its a little pink hanging mirror with a bell on the end.

But while I was there i saw this parakeet that was all white and blue.. No other colors VERY pretty and I wanted him sooooooooo bad.... I'm not ready for another one just yet i have a big enough cage but im still selfish with Bud right now.. But I was wondering... If in the future I was to buy another bird how would I introduce them? I know not to put them together right away... I'm asking because im curious.... My sister bought all 3 hers at the same time so she couldnt answer my question..

When I first decided to get a bird like i do with any animal i adopt I get all the information i can. But i didnt see anything about getting a new one... Like i said though im not getting another one anytime soon no matter how much i want to.. just curious, something to think on smile

First you quarantine it from Bud for about a month, in a separate cage in a separate room. Then after the month quarantine, you can move his cage into the same room for a couple days or weeks. And then you can put it in with Bud.

I've been thinking about getting another in a few months. Not really sure though. Bud seems to be keeping you busy and until he is COMPLETELY trained, I'd hold off on it.

I've been tempted a few times just like you but I've made a promise that I'd wait at least a few months.

Like Kim said...quarantine is sooo important. I would quarantine for at least 45 days. That would give you time to watch for unseen illness and also give you time to work with the new guy/gal.
You should be aware tho, that sometimes a bird can be a carrier of an illness that goes undetected without testing being done. So your best bet is to have a wellness check on the new guy before introducing them. These types of illnesses I think are even more prevalent in pet store birds.

When it's time to introduce them, again as Kim mentioned you should move the new one's cage in to the same room with Bud..across the room and then maybe side by side. For first physical intros it's best to let them meet outside of cages so there is less chance of territorial issues.
Neutral territory so to speak.

Have you by any chance given thought to getting one from a breeder instead of pet store?
If you want links to possibly locate breeder in your area let me know.
But you are doing the smart thing by giving it lots of thought before getting another. Saving up for a tidy emergency vet fund is always a very good idea beforehand
and also still being selfish with Bud is great too!!! I liiiike it!!! lol

Enjoy your new toy Bud smile

90 days quarantine...i know why everyone want to shorten the span but...if your going to do it DO IT RIGHT...otherwise it doesnt really matter.

you have years with your bird to train or whatever ....but only if it is not infected with something and then infects any others you have...cant

do much with a dead bird/birds and SICK HUMANS also.

dont take short cuts to a very important step...sigh

Yes..for sure 90 days would be optimal for quarantine. Quarantine is so very important and shouldn't be rushed.

Lindsey, here are a few links that might help you locate a breeder near you.

If you can find one, I would buy from a breeder over a pet store. Even if it means having to travel a ways. That is if/when you decide to get another one. Check them out first tho of course..as far as what their facilities look like(cleanliness, setup..) and how alll the birds look.

I am by no means trying to persuade you in to getting another tho...single birds can be perfectly happy as long as they get plenty of attention from their human flock. Adding to the family is a big decision and should be thought out thoroughly. smile

I started my search for a breeder by googling 'hand raised budgies in (put in your state or city). From there, I visited web sites and did my research on the breeders I found.

But I agree with kksuns, this is by no means encouragement to get another bird but solely as information.

90 Days is preferrable, but I think I only made it 30 - 40 days before I put Jazz and the girls together, since they all looked healthy. However, I just ended up separating them again, because the girls were going crazy and fighting over Jazz. "He's mine!" "No! He's mine!" Stuff like that. -____- Just be wise about your quarantine, okay.

Oh my Jess! LOL Poor Jazz. All those women fighting over him? eeek!

Really tho? It may sound funny but I shouldn't joke... it can be QUITE serious when those gals get fighting over a guy.

Just wondering Jess..what was Jazz's take on the whole fighting over him bit? Was he impressed or just trying his best to stay clear and stay out of it? Did he seem to have a particular lady he was attracted to more than the rest?

I've only had the 2 boys so....I'm just curious

I don't think Jazz was too thrilled about the whole thing. He would try to stay clear of everyone trying to get his attention. The girls would erupt into angry chittering and squawks! Jazz didn't particularly like any of them. I almost think he would have rather been alone. By himself, he seems happier and he plays with his shiney dice, silverwear, and disco ball more. While he was in the bigger cage with the girls, he seemed more depressed and quiet. He even stopped talking. I think I posted about the girls fighting over him in a thread. I'll have to find it. I don't know...Jazz just seems to like me more than any bird. When I adopted him from Petsmart, he was alone in the "back" with no other birds. So, who knows how long he was back there. Jazz is more sexually attracted to his night blanket, than any of them! Haha! Poor girls...I've been trying to find them good homes, but no one wants birds these days. I will probably end up taking them to a bird rescue or sanctuary where they can be happy. They just don't get any attention here. Plus, the girls aren't really MY birds, even though I feed them. They belong to my little sister, who is the age of seven. They were a gift - unplanned. I'm really trying my best, though.

Here is the thread about separating the girls --->> http://www.wineintro.com/forum/ubbthread...craz#Post406232
