My neighbor got a parakeet from someone and he tried to put a toy in the cage because his keet does not have anything except 2 wooden swings, 2 wooden perches, a mirror, and of course the food dishes. Well anyways when he put the toy in the bird went crazy and almost got stuck in the cage by trying to fit between the bars. I mean he got his wings between the bars by flapping so much. He did get them out safely. Why did his bird go nuts?? I am hoping to be able to tell him something, Oh yes I plan to get a new bird in 2 weeks. I know I have not been on for a long time but hey I am here now (LOL). Ok any help will be great.

You need to introduce new items slowly. since this bird isn't used to toys it would be wise to just leave it on a table nearby so the bird could get used it it.

What size is the bird cage and how far apart are the wires spaced? For a parakeet they must be no longer than 1/2" (one-half inch). Any larger and you risk your bird escaping or injuring themselves.

ps: I hope there is a water dish in the cage too!

Cuberbud gave a lot of good information. New toys or anything must be introduced slowly to some birds. First just leave it on a table or desk near by. Then maybe move it to the top of the cage, then maybe hang it on the outside of the cage, then finally move it into the cage.
