Hello all,
I was briefly a member here back in 2006 (any of you who go back that far may remember me as "Chatterbox's Best Friend") but after he died in September of that year, I swore off budgies because his death hurt too much and I also stopped posting here.
I did eventually get another budgie, Tiki, who turned out to be one of the sweetest little birds ever. In fact, he turned out to be my second favorite of all the budgies I've had, going back to 1968.
But Tiki developed a tumor in his abdomen, and his vet didn't think he would survive surgery, so he came home to live his final days here. Only he held on a bit better than he should have, because even though he was in obvious pain and suffering he hung on for several weeks.
Last Monday, because he was so obviously miserable, I took him back to the vet and had him put to sleep. I know I did the right thing for him, but it hurt a lot anyway.
Before all the business with the tumor, though, I was arranging to adopt a budgie from Mickaboo in San Jose as a cagemate for Tiki. Now it's going to be two budgies (Buddy and Chance), as soon as we can figure out how to get them the 300 miles from there to here.
If you want to see my two new little guys, check out their profiles on the Mickaboo website. Hopefully these two will set the kind of longevity records that Lisa's have.

Kymber - it's great to haer from you!
I know it can be really challenging to handle the pain of a dying pet. You want them to be happy, and you want to do your best to care for them. I'm sure Tiki's final days were the best they could be.
It is wonderful that you are rescuing two new budgies and bringing them peaceful new homes!

Buddy and Chance arrived at 6:30 this morning after an all-night drive from San Jose (one of the Mickaboo volunteers needed to be in Orange County today and brought them down). The new little guys were understandably apprehensive about being in a new home but after listening to a MP3 of budgie chatter on repeat for about a half-hour they have settled in and are now happily talking to each other again. I'm sure once they get used to me they'll be just fine. The Mickaboo folks tell me they are very sweet little budgies, and except for their attempts to bite me during the transfer from travel cage to permanent one (and I expected them to do that ) they are showing every signs of that.

Kimber - congratulations on your new guys. Do you know how old they are. I will go look at their profiles on Mickaboo.
I used to live in Van Nuys, just off Sepulvada and Sherman Way.

kksums - I had looked at them when Kymber first posted and they were there. I was going to go get you the link and they aren't there anymore - I guess because they are adopted. They are both classic green/yellow based budgies. A lot like the one in Kymbers avatar.
Kymber - we would love to see pictures.

Indeed they have been moved from the "available for adoption" section at Mickaboo ... to the "success stories" section. Buddy is: http://mickaboo.org/our-birds/frame3082.htmlChance is: http://mickaboo.org/our-birds/frame3082.htmlTheir status on the pages hasn't been changed yet, though. The little guys are doing just fine. They explored every corner of their cage yesterday and today I opened the cage door so they could explore the outside of the cage and their playpen. (I deliberately have rope perches and stuff on the front of the cage and on the side over the playpen so my budgies can climb around.) They have flown around the room a little and have no trouble finding where the cage is to land. They also have no problem with going back inside the cage. I can see I'm not going to ever regret adopting these two. Barbara, give me a few more days to let them finish settling in before I start surprising them with the camera flash. (Sepulveda and Sherman Way is literally only one mile east of where I live, just off Woodley a block south of Sherman Way.)

Wow, I used Sepulveda just because it was a major street. I lived just north of Sherman Way just off of Woodley on Gloria for years, then on Gaviota. Small world. I was a valley girl WAY before it was cool to be a valley girl.
