jilly - not sure there would have been much development of baja - the place is dry as a bone. besides, baja was given back because it was worthless.

lisa - it is all about mobility. the tragedy in israel is that the zionists can afford to move in because they get a virtually free house (often recently vacated by evicted palestinians) and help from the state of israel, and the local paestinians can't afford to stop them.

I agree being able to move is part of it - but I think that comes from the financing. If the Israelis were dirt poor they probably wouldn't be able to force the Palestinians to move out. It's because they have funding for their military and for political contacts that they can move through these projects. Again if Ethiopia decided they wanted to move into Palestine they wouldn't be able to do it, even if they were completely willing to move. They don't have the funding. Israel has plenty of money which translates into power.

Right, Janimal. I have spent months there every year for a long time, all over Baja, for the last two decades. I love it. But I think if the US kept it, we would have brought in water like we bring it to LA and San Diego, and ruined its serenity.

As it is, some towns are getting touristy anyway, beyond just the Los Cabos area.

Grumble grumble.

It's a mixed bag. It's hard to be upset at tourists for liking an area. That falls into the category of "I love this secret area but nobody else can visit it". But if you get tens of thousands of people visiting a secret area, then they need places to sleep, and places to eat, and those buildings all change the character of the location.

But then again if someone is poor and lives in the area, and they need a job, isn't a good thing that people are coming and bringing money into their economy?

They aren't poor. That is a complete misperception. The border towns are poor and that has sullied the image of rural people in other areas of Baja.

Anyway, there is no water so Cancun-like development is inappropriate.

I am getting agitated at not being able to explain this properly.

Don't be agitated! I think we all agree that it is nice to have undeveloped areas to enjoy in solitude smile
