I remember in my Catholic High School a kid came in wearing a Tee on (civies day=casual) it had Jesus on the cross and read something like "what is so Good about Fridays?" Something to that effect, he was sent home to change, I don't think he came back and got suspended. If there is a religion there is a T-shirt to slam it.
Poor girls.

I personally don't think these girls should have been sent home. I thought everyone had freedom of speech. Guess I was wrong.

Minors don't have freedom of speech, which seems appropriate since they're children and don't have a clue about the ramifications of their words, for the most part.
Secondly, I imagine those shirts constitute a walking hate crime.
When I was in college, one guy painted the cover of a Charlie Daniels Band album on his dorm room door (the outside of the door, so everyone saw it). It was a bloodied white hand & said, "The South Will Rise Again" or some such. It was repainted immediately (at cost to the student) because it was inherently offensive to others forced to view it.
He had a right to freedom of speech and a right to his opinion, but he doesn't have a right to force innocent people to be confronted with racist claptrap. To me, that's the whole underpinning of developing laws that encompass various hate crimes (not to mention good taste, common decency, etc.).

I'm pretty sure minors DO have freedom of speech. If you can prove me wrong, go ahead, but I'd prefer not to be thrown in jail because I said I don't like the president. I'm a minor. If I don't have freedom of speech, what's preventing them from shutting me up? When I turn 18 do my thoughts become more important? Secondly, I imagine those shirts constitute a walking hate crime.
How? She wasn't hurting anyone, or vandalising anything. She was stating an opinion!
I really could care less. I'm pretty sure that's vandalism, though, so they had a right to do that. He had a right to freedom of speech and a right to his opinion, but he doesn't have a right to force innocent people to be confronted with racist claptrap. To me, that's the whole underpinning of developing laws that encompass various hate crimes (not to mention good taste, common decency, etc.). Good taste and decency are relative. Yes, if I have an opinion I do have the right to tell others my opinion. hate speech is not freedom of speech.
Yes it is. Who is to say what's hate speech? high schools and junior high and elementary schools are not platforms they are places to learn.
That's nice. I can still state my opinion in them. now if a kid wears osmething that says i heart islam or i heart jesus and was sent home that would be wrong as that is not violating anyone nor is it disrespecting anyone or anything like that, it isnt asking someone to do anything nor is it insulting an entire group of people based on race, religion, creed, secual orientation or ethnic group.
What if someone believes that islam is evil? It is disrespecting their beliefs. how do you think muslim children would feel going to school seeing that> having to sit next to a kid wearing that? i can promise you no learning would take place for that muslim child, and there fore the shirt becomes a hinderance to the learning process.
Uh-huh. Does Islam even believe in a devil? if someone wore a shirt that said death to all ni**ers or kill all the jews ... people would be up in arms and rightfully so!!! because its hateful and prevents the learning process from progressing. Hateful speech is protected under freedom of speech. If I find I <3 Jesus offensive, can I get someone sent home? What about a Yankees t-shirt, or an Obama t-shirt?

first of all yowo ... you used to be a nice kid ... lately you only post things to get a rise of peole so im not falling for it 2nd, yes islam does believe in the devil, and even if it didnt it would not matter. and no hate speech is NOT protected under freedom of speech, its covered under hate crimes. if my muslim children (i dont have any) went to school and had to be around kids wearing such shirts they would NOT be going to that school, its that simple. and no child should have to.

I don't understand.2nd, yes islam does believe in the devil, and even if it didnt it would not matter. Really? Because I'm guessing that if the shirt said "Islam is of the evil pizza monster!" people wouldn't be so mad.and no hate speech is NOT protected under freedom of speech, its covered under hate crimes. Speaking an opinion deemed wrong by society is now a crime. Greeeeeeat.if my muslim children (i dont have any) went to school and had to be around kids wearing such shirts they would NOT be going to that school, its that simple. and no child should have to. Or you could tell your kids to ignore them

most public schools these days have dress code rules stating that no shirts can be worn that express religious or political opinions, and i agree with that. you are free to wear them just not to school. Not mine. Guess we here don't believe in fascism.

Most US schools do, however, have a dress code rule that states that no one is allowed to dress in a way that causes disruption in the classroom. This is one of those things that would. So the school is within it's place to send a student (or two) home for causing disorder to some extent.
