I am getting a new budgie next week!!!! YAY!! Sherby is going to have a brother (hopefully, barring any surprises). Anyway, I'm not sure how to start out with the second one. My husband and I spend most of our time in one room, and its where Sherby's cage is. Do you guys think it would be okay to have them in the same room during the quarantine period, just across the room out of sight from each other. Plus, my husband and I are both working almost full time so I thought they might be happier if they could hear each other, or would that make it too difficult to train the new one?

Here in ottawa Canada, we have this site called usedottawa.com there are others like craiglist etc. its like a free local ebay without bids just buying prices, I reccomend going to these sites you can either adopt or get a new baby budgie from a local breeder, you will know that the bird is young and that he is alrady hand tamed etc, Good luck as far as letting them hear eachother yeah just put them close enough to hear but not to close i think some people put the quaritine cage right next to their main cage, i think that is kind of pointless but if it works,

I know where I'm getting the bird. We have a very respectable pet store in the Lansing area. Its where we got Sherby. They have a very cute batch of hand fed babies in right now. If he's still there I am going to get one that is all white, except for a little patch of sky blue on its chest. I'm still trying to decide on a name. I was thinking Gelatto, to go with Sherbet. Although seeing this one I also came up with Mostly Cloudy (Emcee), of course then I would have to get yet another one and name it Chance of Rain or something.

First of all congrats on the new addition to your flock! If I understand you correctly you are planning to quarantine them in different cages in the same room.
This totally defeats the purpose of quarantining them as some diseases that may not show up for 30-45 days are transmittable via air.
It will be tough but better safe than sorry!

sounds like a great site for finding baby keets in Canada. Our craigs list in Chicago never has any baby keets.

I'm going to have a quarantine problem when I break down and get a second one too. The only place I have to quarantine is the room right off the living room where Levi is. There is a big open archway going to this room. There's no way I can block it off. So if I can't put them in totally separate rooms does that mean I shouldn't get a second one?! I really want to get him a buddy. I may have to just throw caution to the wind and go for it anyway.

when i had received my first 2 keets, i put them in a cage together, then 2 weeks later when I was given 2 very young baby boy keets, I had absolutely no Idea that you were suppose to separate them, and I put them all in the same cage... I did introduce them outside of the cage, and let them work their issues out in neutral ground. The first 2 days there was squawking and "pecking" order being established, but the 4 of them worked out their problems within 72 hours and have been content ever since... I just made sure i gave them equal treats, and gave them their own feeders and sleeping perches on all separate corner of the cage so they would have some space to claim... now a month later they are all happy as can be and play and sleep snuggled up to each other..... soo I'm not to sure about the quarantine things but i think them being close to each other at least is probably better in the long run....

4vakeets, It sounds like you got 4 almost all at once! Wow! And it is good to hear that they all get along and snuggle and stuff. That's why I want another one. Levi want to snuggle too! LOL I think their being able to see and talk to each other from separate cages for a while would make introduction easier too.And of course I would want to somewhat tame the new guy before putting them together anyway. I just worry about the new one having an illness. In my case i don't have much choice, I CAN'T really put them in totally separate rooms. Oh well, I guess the budgie safety patrol will be on my *** hehe What's the fine for breaking quarantine rules? How many of you have gotten a new bird that ended up being sick? I mean is it frequent or what?

kk, you'll get no ** from me! You are a great parront. The best you can do is all you can do. I guess if you can't quarantine I would try to get them from a breeder with a good rep. rather than a pet store. But you'll find many instances where doing just that worked out great. Quarantine is just a precaution.
I would think intro on a neutral territory would be an excellent idea. I don't know what I'll do if I decide to get Emily a buddy. She thinks the whole house is hers. Guess we'd have to go in the garage. :-)

Thats going to be my problem too. When I do get another parakeet the only choices I have are either my room which has a door and isnt very big or the bathroom next door to my room which isnt a good idea since bathrooms arent all that clean. Those are the only two rooms in my house with doors on them :\. Any ideas?
