Ok, because I am a super neat freak, and cannot stand any odors (though I do have a bad sense of smell, and sometimes it's hard for me to tell) I was wondering what is safe to use around my delicate little friends? I don't really use candles in general since my bf has weird allergies, but I am a fabreeze fanatic, and I've also heard that reed diffusers are safe around birds... Has anyone used them and not had problems? Also what about soy candles or pet odor candles... I'm just looking for a safe alternative to keep my home as cozy as possible smile

I use Febreze for fabrics in a room far from Pudgie, but if I have to use it in the living room, I move her entire cage out of there (so I don't do it often!). You could move pillows and cushions to another room, spray them, and move them back in in a few hours.

If you mean air fresheners, then no, none of them are good for birds' lungs. I don't know anything about the reed diffusers specifically, but I personally would not use them near Pudgie.

Helwa posted a while back about bird-safe candles, but I can't remember if they were soy or beeswax; you still want to avoid smoke from the wick getting at your bird...

I do sympathize with you -- I used to be a scented candle freak! But not any more... smile

absolutely no cleaning products around them, not in the same room anyway, and if you are using them in other rooms be very very careful and ventilate the house well.

NO CANDLES enless they are soy, the parafin wax is very toxic to them.

no insense and none of those plug in air fresheners or air fresheners of any kind really, spray or other wise and no febreeze in their room.

i know that sounds horrible. but there are non toxic alternatives.

soy candles cost the same and actualy smell better, target has a good selection of soy candles, if it is soy it will say so on the label, if it doesnt say then it isnt soy.

also target has a brand of cleaning products called 'method' that are non toxic and i use those, they also make air freshener sprays and disks to set around the house and i use those as well, they smell fantastic.

also check whole foods if you have one near you, (grocer store)
www.wholefoods.com

they have an entire isle of non toxic house hold cleansers.

a cheap cleaner would be apple cider vinegar and water, 2 parts water to 1 part apple cider vinegar, absolutely no other kind of vinegar is ok nor will it work, ACV is famous for its antibacterial properties.

that is the best thing to clean their cage with, also method makes cleaning wipes that are non toxic and i use those to clean the grate inside their cage. i do not get the scented ones, i get the unscented ones called go naked in the blue package.

try the method air fresheners, you wont be disappointed.

dont spray them in the room the keets are in, even though they are "non toxic" they still arent good to just breath in. and their nose is waaaay more sensitive than ours.

Thanks, Helwa -- I totally spaced out on Target's "Method" stuff, even though I've been using it (dish detergent and general cleaning spray) for almost two years now! D'oh! The lavender ones -- mmmmmmm! smile
