How do you know if there is teflon in them? Does it say on the box? Are ya safe getting a ceramic heater or can those possibly have teflon too?

As far as I know, the ceramic heaters should NOT have Teflon in them.

I wanted to respond to the question about electric heaters. My son was sick and I wanted to use a Patton electric space heater. I had read on a different web-site about birds being killed by PTFE?? or teflon on the paint or parts of the heater. I called the Patton company to ask if theirs contained these substances as it is not listed on the label on the heater, The Patton company is in Indiana USA but it is manufactured in China the cust. service rep. checked with her supervisor and called me back to say that there heater was safe and I could use around our parakeets. I had ran the heater for approx.10 minutes and went to check on the birds who were in a different bedroom but the doors to the bedroom had been open. Roseberry was lying dead on the bottom of the cage and snow drop was breathing heavy on the floor of her cage I took her downstairs away from the heater but within a minute she had passed too. Companies don't know what is put into their products. I am waiting for a call from the supervisor at Patton. It will not bring back my babies but maybe it will alert others. I read that the birds die from a pulmonary hemmorage. This has upset our entire family please don't use any space heaters.

I'm using a more expencive space heater that was my husbands before we were married. So far we have weathered 2 winters with it.
I feel aweful about your keets Roseberry!!! It is so sad! They went so quickly. Made me cry when I read your post. Are you getting another pair of keets?

That is beyond frightening, I can't believe you called them and they told you it was safe.

i bought a honeywell ceramic electric heater and ran it for a while near the bird cage with no ill effect. But Roseberry's horrid experience has now scared the daylights out of me!

Roseberry, I am soo sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine having to go through something like that. Thank you so much for sharing your story.

Everyone? Before I purchased Clyde I was searching for info on how to take care of them, etc., I read that the temperature setting can be anywhere from 60 to 80 degrees. Is this false information? Because, honestly, before Clyde I would shut my heat off during the day while everyone was at work or at school. Now that I have him, I leave it on, but it's not set any higher than 68. Am I doing something wrong?

i would just go with ceramic, its better, heats better, and has no fumes ...which is better for you and the birds.
