I know we have probably had similar threads, but I was curious
about how people would feel on this one. Below is a bit from
a travel agent publication:

Quote:
............... is suing six casinos in Atlantic City and one in Las Vegas, claiming they are responsible for noticing that she had a problem with gambling and should have stopped her. "They knew I was going for days without eating or sleeping," Taveras said. "I would pass out at the tables. They had a duty of care to me. Nobody in their right mind would gamble for four or five straight days without sleeping." ...............

Did the casinos have an obligation to stop her from gambling? Do bars have an obligation to stop people from drinkings? Should resturants stop people from over-eating? At what point do we
abdicate any responsibility for our own actions?

Well, I suppose you would expect someone else to have a bit of common sense even if she didn't, but .......

I think casinos are a different story then restaurants, or bars. Casinos often don't have clocks around, nor do they have windows. So you lose track of time. They don't care if you sit around and gamble all night or for NIGHTS. I think this law-suit, if successful could start many casinos into curbing their behaviours and placing timing devices around. Cigarette companies are legally obligated to place warnings on their products, I don't see the reason why casios can't do the same. If measures are taken to help gamblers (maybe even placing signs around their casino with numbers for gambling hotlines) then responsibility is then placed on the gambler's shoulders.

Australia has gaming venues in clubs and pubs as well as casino. In all these we have timing devices, self help and warning signs and now there is a push to ban ATMs from gaming venues.
Does this do anything for the problem Gambler? I don't think so!!!Problem Gambling is a disorder that only the Gambler themselves can solve and the first steps in that is that the gambler has to accept that they have a problem and they have to want to do something about it.
You could shut down every gaming venue in the country and the problem gambler would still find ways to feed his/her cravings, even if it's just betting on two flies crawling up the wall.
Abdicating the responsibility of an individual's disorder by Government regulation is punishing the majority for the sake of the minority and an exercise in vote catching.
The money spent in enforcing these regulations and putting them in place would be better used by providing more and affordable rehabilitation centres. Then we are saying to the problem gambler (or whatever disorder) ok when you are ready to accept that you have a problem, we are providing the means to help you overcome your problem

Probably the best idea.

When they authorized casinos in Michigan, part of the agreement was that the casinos would contribute to a fund-that would advertise and support groups like Gamblers Anonymous. There are
commercials on television, bill boards etc with telephone numbers
urging people to get help. I think like any addiction-gambling
can only be resolved by the person recognizing they have a problem and taking the steps themselves.

You have to wonder if the casinos had stepped in (since she is suing 5 maybe some of the did) would she be suing them for not
allowing her to gamble!

Yes, I think that responsibility needs to be taken by both sides in matters like this.

I don't think that she should be able to sue them for her own lack of will power & common sense.
