Poor Nero's eye was so swollen this morning that we decided to include him in the vet trip this morning, Ace had to go for his checkup. She said that the reason his eye was so fluid filled was because the mites were forcing their way out because of the Avomectin and causing a lot of irritation so she lanced the pus filled sac, and it was so, so gross, the pus was all thick and stringy...eww...but anyway, the swelling immediately went down. She gave me some samples of an ointment that I have to put into his eye everyday and told me to use Similasan, which is a homeopathic eye wash for styes, to clean his eye several times a day or if it's looking puffy again. SHe said to continue to put the olive oil around his face, legs, and vent, to suffocate any mites, and to continue with the Avomectin three times a day. She weighed him and he only weighs 19 grams, she said for his age and size he should be at at least 25, so she told me to make sure he eats and to give him extra millet.
Ace is doing really well. He uses his foot now, with the exception of his longest toe, she said he might not be able to use it again because of the angle it was broken at and healed. Otherwise he got a squeaky clean bill of health!
In the evening I can tell when the guys are ready to be separated and covered for the night because they'll start to roost. Sunny and Igor always take up what is apparently the best spot to roost in Ace's cage, a little blue plastic half perch that's the highest in the cage. Well, last night Ace got up there while Sunny and Igor were still playing, so I braced myself for a fight when they noticed him there. But, to my surprise, it wasn't Igor and Sunny bullying Ace off the prime spot that caused a fight, but those two fighting each other to sit with Ace! I was shocked! They barely pick at him anymore, and maybe this was a sign that all will be well between them from now on!

Jessica, your new avitar is so funny! Are those all your cats? Aww, poor Nero! I've had sty's before, and they are so rotten! I had to have them surgicaly removed like two or three times, and I had to put this goopy stuff in my eye two or three times a day. I didn't like it at all. I'm glad your little guys are doing well I hope that Nero continues to get better. Poor baby!

HA! Nope, not my cats, just found it on Photobucket! I can't imagine having so many cats. LOL
Well, he doesn't really have a sty, it's from the mites, but the sty medication will help relieve his symptoms.
I had a sty only once, years ago, and I can feel you on that, they suck!
Thanks for the get well wishes!

I bet Nero feels so much better after having that taken care of. A lot of people really underestimate how sick mites can make a bird. Your guys are lucky they ended up with you.

You know what? I've had a problem with my one big toe where the nail keeps becoming ingrown. I've had to have it surgicaly cut out twice before already, and it's happening again, I think. Anyways, it gets to the point where it's swolen and it's very sore, but as soon as the pressure is aleviated by lancing the infected sac, it hardly hurts at all!!
My point is that I bet he is in SO MUCH less pain now, if any! You're a good birdie mamma.
