How long have you been trying to train him and how long have you had him. It takes time.

Your first post said you'd only had him for two weeks. That's not very long at all in parakeet time. But if he's chirping a lot, that means he's content and feels reasonably safe in his new cage, so you've made a good start.

It takes time, patience, and persistence to train a parakeet. There are some helpful tips on Lisa's main site (see the link in the bottom corner of this page). Above all, don't rush! Move slowly in or near the cage while he gets used to you, and be sure to talk nicely and/or sing to him lots.

He repeats some of your sounds? That's great! It means he's interested in you, even if he doesn't trust you yet. That's a very good thing. (And you may be able to teach him to talk, if you want to.)

Have you tried just holding your hand still in his cage for a few minutes at a time? Do this a couple times a day, every day. Once that doesn't totally freak him out, you put your hand in, wait until he is sitting calmly, and then slowly move your hand closer to him - and stop when you see he's about to run away. Hold there for a minute or so while he calms down and realizes nothing bad is happening to him.

For most keets, it doesn't take all that long before they will be calm about having your hand near them - although it seems like _forever_ to the human!

Sure he'll like you smile. It just takes time, and lots of it. By the sounds of it he just needs time to get used to your pressence. Once you get used to your bird's behaviour and read lots of posts here about how other people's bird act you'll start to be able to get a good grasp on where your budgie stands with liking you. They all have different personalities so your budgie may take longer to get used to you then other people's birds do.

Also, make sure the cat is out of the room when you are interacting with him. Many members have had cats that didn't care about their keets until they got a hold of them and killed them. Keep the cat out of the room the keet is in. Cats can knock down cages and hurt keets a lot easier than you think.

I just saw the cat thing. You should be careful. My father in law had his bird for years and the cat never even gave the bird a second glance and then one day the cat just lept into the air as the budgie was flying and killed him instantly. Your lucky your bird is just scared of obviously scarey things grin, mine are paranoid and scared of EVERYTHING new (even scarey shaped sprays of millet).

It took me about 4 months to train Ally and almost a year to train Sky. Cricket took me like a day. All parakeets are different so you just need to be patient and she'll come around smile
