The FDA in the United States has okayed the sale of meat and milk from cloned animals to be sold to consumers. It is not yet
clear if a special label will be required (so you know you are buying products from cloned animals). Any thoughts, is this okay with people, or would you rather not know, or rather not buy these types of products?

Just last month the cows meat would give us sickness.

We talked about this in school.

first off, cloning things is not okay with me. would there be something wrong with the cloned meat? other than the fact that it was cloned. they should have a special label on it, though.

hi--cloning occurs naturally also--twins, triplets etc. Not particularly unsafe unless starting with an unsafe animal. If a particularly good animal produces quality cuts of meat why not clone it rather than risk losing the strain by breeding?--nicolo

I guess I don't see anything wrong with it. How can we get upset and feel bad for the cow/lamb/pig because we eat it. So what is the difference? Just because you know its cloned?
If you feel bad about eating the meat than the only other choice we have is to become vegetarians and not eat meat at all.
This is why I could never be a farmer I would never have the heart to kill any of my animals. Its just best I go into the store and buy the stuff in the packages because if I had to look the animal in the face I'd never be able to eat it.
My mom once had a pet chicken as a kid and my grandparents killed it and served it for supper my mom was heart broken and could not eat it. That to me would be just awful. I always wonder how these kids can raise an animal for 4H take it to a fair and then sell it to people that they know are going to slaughter it for eating. I guess it must make a difference if you have been raised on a farm.
But to answer your question I would eat meat that has been cloned so long as the animal was healthy.

Well, I am a vegetarian, so this doesn't specifically apply to me, but I still think it's wrong. I do feel bad about these animals getting cloned so their only purpose in life is to be eaten. [even if this happens with cows bred for meat anyway] I am against the act of humans cloning animals altogether [and humans cloning humans for a matter of fact]. This is not becuase of religion or anything like "not playing god" but I don't believe we should be fooling with nature. twins and tripplets occur naturally, not cloned cows.

I dont understand why we're spending millions on cloning cows that MAY be of questionable health, when there are tons of cows that people are already forcing to breed?
we've already got all those cows, if you're going ot eat meat, eat those! don't spend a ton of money coming up with cooler ways to have cows to kill.

sorry if that sounded a little blunt. but I actually had conversations about this topic today and saw it on the news.
the thing is, we could avoid most of the controversy if the FDA would just require more specific labeling.

I guess I don't know enough about how cloning is actually done to make an informed decision. I am getting very leary of things that have been genetically altered-since this is a relatively new process (less than 10 years)--I think it bothers me that there could be some kind of long term effects--that won't show up for another 20 years.

The_Zookeeper, would you eat cloned veggies? =P

I don't have a big issue with cloning animals. My only beef with cloned meet is if it has been proven not to have any side effects. If anything in the process of cloning somehow alters the animal or creates some by-product. If it's been tested, fed to monkeys or whatever and proven (over a course of time, say a few years) not to cause any long term or immediate side effects, then heck, I have no problem with it.

It might even lower the cost of meet for all we know. If they find a way to mass produce animals faster than the natural process, maybe the cost of meet will become exceedingly smaller? Or.... maybe it would eradicate the need for normal farmers, and put many farms out of business and raise the cost of meet? Much to think about.
