Is it best to have 2 birds or only one if you have to go to school, but will still have time to play with your bird?

I just have one parakeet and he does fine while I am away at school. Just so long as you are able to play with him/her when you are home, it is fine to just have one 'keet. Plus, it is easier to bond with one parakeet than two. Once you have trained and bonded with your first parakeet, then perhaps you might want to get a second one. Good luck!

Hey! I know you. XD

You just need one parakeet really, other birds like finches need company, like a partner. You at least need to have time to play with your bird. I only have one bird, and she does fine alone.

Good luck!!

I talked to an expert and she told me that a parakeet will never be completely happy by itself (or a mirror). But, the WORST thing you can do is buy a second one from a different litter of birds. The birds must be from the same group from birth. If they are from different litters they might attack or kill eachother. If you do get them from 2 litters you must buy 2 cages and slowly introduce them to eachother by putting the cages close to eachother. Eventually, if they don't squawk or try to peck at eachother too much then you can introduce them to the same cage.

All of my birds have shared a cage at one time or another. It does take time for them to get used to each other. Mine are from Petsmart, breeder, and one that flew into my back yard. None of them are from the same group or litter. They have all gotten along well together. I think its how you introduce them that makes the difference. Dont rush it. Give the birds time to get to know each other.

Well, you never know.

I would never advocate doing this deliberately, but here's what happened when we bought our pair from a bin-o-budgies store, expecting that the staff would know what they were doing.

We picked one blue and one classic green, both lively. They lived in separate cages at the store, not in view of each other. The clerk swiped them up and put them into a single box for us to carry home. And we popped them straight into our one cage when we got home. The poor things sat in opposite corners for a few days...

I guess the good part is that neither one felt it had the right to be territorial. It took them a few weeks to really make friends, but they didn't seriously fight.
