I went to get another parakeet yesterday. I have her cage next to Pino's. She seems pretty comfortable already and they've been having some conversations.
However, I have yet to see the new birdy (cogito) eat yet. And she had diarrhea. She knows where the dishes are and I saw her sitting on them earlier. I just haven't seen her eat/drink yet. Pino's poop has never looked like this before. Anything I can/should do?

Diarrhea in birds can cause death! Try to give Cogito dry oatmeal and bannana. Some people have mixed Aloe Vera and water and treated that to their birds. It supposedly helps keep the intestinal flora flowing.

If the diarrhea doesn't stop, you should talk to a vet.

thank you so much. can I get more to confirm on the oatmeal/ banana/ aloe vera?
despite the diarrhea, she seems healthy. but I know birds will disguise their health issues.
also, less important, I have never had a bird with clipped wings before. how long will it be until she can fly again? and she also has a cuff, which Pino doesn't have. should I just leave that alone?

Hi pino,
Congrats on ur new keet smile
In case you didn't know...you really should have quarantined the new one for at least 30-45 days before putting him next to Pino. I don't know if it's too late to do so, but you might want to do it anyway for safety's sake.
As for the diarrhea...it's pretty common with new arrivals. Being in a new environment and being scared and stressed can cause diarrhea. So calm down and don't worry too much about it quite yet. Just keep an eye on it and if it doesn't straighten out soon, then take her to Avian vet. It's actually a good idea to get a checkup anyway smile
It's also pretty normal that you haven't seen the new kid eat or drink yet. They are too scared to eat/drink in front of you. It's a good sign that you've seen her perched on food dish tho! Check dish for empty seed hulls..if there are hulls she has been eating.
Clipped wings will grow back with the next molt.Any idea how old she is? Does she still have baby stripes on her forehead leading down to her cere?
The band on her leg is breeder info. DON'T try to remove it yourself. If you want it removed have a vet or someone with experience do it. I've never had a bird with a band, but from what I've heard it's pretty hard to remove and you could injure your bird trying to remove it.
Personally I think I would want it off. Only because I think it would be annoying to a bird to have a band. Maybe it really doesn't bother them at all? I just know it would bug ME if i were a bird! LOL

its not a cuff if what you mean is on the leg its a identity band...and YES LEAVE IT ALONE...and id be more worried of the diarrhea than if she will fill etc and if she lives yes she will BRING TO A AVIAN VET. Do NOT have her caged with the other bird..This new one should of been and should be kept separate from your other on in a different cage an different room for MIN. OF 30DAYS

I didn't realize that quarantine had to mean a different room. they are in the same room, in separate cages, that are spaced from each other but they can still see each other. Is this a problem?
please don't seem so condescending illusive fantasy. maybe it is not how you meant it to read, but that is the way it is coming off to me. of course I am more concerned about the diarrhea~ "if she lives" what a horrible thing to say.

kksuns, I had checked the dish earlier and you were right on the husks! but now she is sitting IN the dish eating. lol. there is a perch on it, but I guess she would rather stand in the food.

she has also been singing like crazy. I will add some banana slices in a treat dish, but since she is eating the seed right now I don't want to frighten her.

Omg sorry i truly didnt mean that to sound that way geeeesh but yep it sure did and i doooo apologize for that...sigh..sooo sorry...in trying to keep a post and thoughts brief THAT one didnt come off to well did it. Really i never meant it that way.

But yes different room is done when quarantine because if not then its not really considered being a quarantine situation...they will still hear each other...but ok back to other problem..dehydration with diarrhea happens quick an dang if all these things with our birds doesnt happen quick so yes its important to get the bird to a avian vet or bring back to the place where you purchased and pick another bird and let them deal with it...i hope the lil new one the best no matter what and again...SOOOOO sorry that DID sound horrid...forgive me please???

Just how bad IS the runny poops? I would take Cogito to a separate room, cover all but the front of her cage for a few days so she can relax and get used to her new home. I think the runny poo will clear up once she's not feeling so stressed? Give her another day without bothering her too much so she can calm down.
I know both of mine had the runny poops the first couple days. Not like liquid but definitely loose poops.
Here we go discussing POOP again! LOL
Yaaay! At least you know she's eating! LOL She's sitting IN the dish! haha Crazy bird! Can you put water dish next to food dish so she will be sure to check it out? Staying hydrated during diarrhea is very important.
