Well last night my doorbell rang after it got dark, there on my porch stood my neighbors holding up a tiny little bird cage full of piles of poop and what they thought was a parakeet, only it turned out to be a canary. They had rescued it earlier in the day and thought of me, so now beside my flock of 7 keets, I now have Tiki the Canary.

I went, set up a cage, he jumped right in through the doors. He's already eating, yammering at me and even took a nice bath today. I went and got his food, pellets and treats today, cause all I have is keet stuff.

Anyone have any knowledge on canaries? I can't find much at all on the net.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry KC, I don't know anything about canaries. But it's good to see you smile How ya been and how's that flock of yours doing?

Kudos for bringing Tiki bird in to your "nest". You'll have to let us know how things go and how keets and canaries get along.

Hey there KK,

The flock is great! Got two pairs, Riley & Pirate and Fried got together with Petunia. They are all healthy and active as can be.

I also recently added a ragdoll kitten to the mix, his name is Chowder and he luvs the keets! I have several pictures of him climbing up the sides of the cage and he likes to lay on top of it and poke at them. His claws don't fit but actually the birds just pick on him now.

Glad to see your little guys are doing well!

Good to hear all is well in keeter land. LOL
A ragdoll kitten?! I've never had one but I've seen them and they are sooo cute. And aren't they supposed to be very cuddly, loveable, docile cats?

I don't know much, except carnaries are part of the finch family and will need that grit that you are not supposed to give to your keets.

PS ask me about that Ragdoll and I can tell you plenty. Have had them. They are great.

The Ragdoll is awesome, specially after having had a feral cat in my house for 14 years. He's a flame point and has a wonderful personality. In the two months we have had him he has never bitten nor scratched agressively at anyone in the family and omg he loves the dogs and they love him! I'll have to post a pic.

As far as Tiki, he is near the window but not close enough to catch a draft, he already yammers at me when I talk to him. I'll have to run and get the grit today, I wasn't sure about that. Hope he sings! I'd love for the keets to pick that up. LOL.

Oh and the neighbor boy who rescued him came over...said the lady was moving, gave him to them and they took him. He said there were roaches crawling all over the cage!

yuck - did you keep him in the same cage, I assume you cleaned and steralized it. I am really interested in your experience with a canary - I have thought about getting one on several occasions but just haven't. My grandma used to have one, from what I remember he was pretty easy to take care of and sang.

I got my bigger cage that I take the keets to the vet in normally, even small its bigger then what he had. I set it up and unsure how to move him, cause he's a quick little guy, I set the doors face to face, opened them and he simply hopped right in. Whew.

I tossed that nasty ass birdcage in the garbage. I set him up a bath yesterday and he jumped right into that as well, guess he needed it.

I've looked up sexing but heck, they are harder to sex then the keets, and until he either sings or doesn't, guess I won't know.
