OK, I know when a hen is in breeding mode the cere turns brown...and that's the case with Cutie. However, she's just going through her first molt. She didn't even lose her forehead stripes completely...any ideas?
I don't think molting makes their cere change color, but maybe her cere is changing because she is just getting older or happens to be going in to breeding mode at the same time as the molt? How old is Cutie?
Well I don't know how old she is exactly. But I've only had her for about 2 months and when I first got her she had the stripes on her forehead all the way down to the cere. She's just starting to lose them now that she's molting. I've read that when they start losing their stripes they're somewhere between 3 and 4 months, so I'm really not sure...
Could just be that her cere is changing a bit earlier than other female budgies' ceres. They all seem to be different! Some get crusty-looking and pretty much stay that way; some change color later than others. An avian vet told me that there's a small percentage of brown-cered budgies who are actually male!
