I think it was extremely nice of you to let the girl keep your cat. However, like tweetymom said, it's not teaching the little girl anything positive. I'm a preK teacher and I know for a fact that kids will whine and cry to get their way and when they do get their way they feel that they can get whatever they want that way. Yes, she wants the cat, but her parents can find another way to let her have one. You should go and get your cat back. If the cat belonged to them and was in your house, would you keep it just because you children wanted it? I wouldn't think so. Just a thought...

Wow this is what makes forums so special. I had not once thought about things you have mentioned tweety.

This is a difficult situation to say the least. being a outsider i still have no idea what i would do in this situation.

I know i would be mad!

I hope you can read and see that animals are special to us all. I hope you can figure out what you want to do.

I don't know if I can. Gaia does not like other cats and Hannibal didn't like other cats either.

I ended up getting Gaia after she was tossed out on the side of the street in a box by her owner several days after I was told Hannibal was dead.

That was a year ago. If I got Hannibal and brought her here with Gaia, they wouldn't get along. I've fostered other cats that I found abandoned when I had Hannibal and she nearly killed them. Gaia sees cats from our window and tries to jump out to get them and hisses.

I can't just dump Gaia for Hannibal or put either of them into a situation like that.

Well, this is surely a sad situation, especially for Hannibal, now that she's seen you and rubbed on you.

I am fostering 2 cats right now and they do not get along with my 2 cats, but they tolerate each other. And my cats are pis***! but they DO tolerate each other more and more. I have to make adjustments in the situation, but it's ok.

It's your call to make, I just keep thinking about Hannibal, wondering what's the deal with her real mama.

I talked to the wife while taking Reba for her walk and tomorrow I am going over to get Hannibal and bring her home to meet Gaia and see how it goes.

Living in a two bedroom apartment with 17 pets and two kids already makes for a crowded situation. I threw away everything that was Hanna's after I thought she was dead. Every toy, her bed, everything. So she'll have nothing here that belongs to her.

I'm not sure how this is going to go, but if it doesn't go well, then I'll have no choice but to give her back and let her go.

Do not give her back. If it were me I would rather see Hannah go to a friend or family member than back to the thief. I feel sorry for the little girl. But her parents are not teaching her right from wrong.
Ultimately it is a tough situation to be in. I feel for you and I know that you are strong enough to make a choice that is good for your family- whatever that may be.
I would be super super wary of the maintenance man. What else could he steal or would steal??

I didn't think about giving her to a friend. I'm just thinking of that little girl too much I guess. Just because I can't imagine how my kids would feel. But she's also learning a valuable lesson about this.

I'll talk to my best friend to see if she'll take Hannibal.

I say you ABSOLUTELY take that cat from that family! What kind of people are they if they can steal someones pet! That is terrible.. and now the theif has his eye on your dog? Call the police. Even if you can't keep Hanna yourself, definitely consider a friend or family member over that wretched family. The little girl will get over it. I doubt she will even remember the cat in a year, but you raised her and you were put through all that suffering for these selfish people.

It's just awful what some people are capable of.

i am thinking that you should go and "borrow" YOUR cat for a few days and see what would happen if he and gaia were put together. gaia would have smelled hannibal in your house so the odor would not be completely foreign. hannibal has been "away" for a while so when he gets back home, gaia's smell will be the as well as his own. if things go well, "repossess" hannibal and have them tell their little girl that they were just practicing to see if she would like a cat and then they should take her to pick out a cat of her very own, not a practice one. i know that is lying but they have obviously been doing that to her for a while now. then you can at least try to get him back and the child will not grow up with a lie, provided by her parents and your cat. if he is able to kidnap cats and dogs... how much danger might he be if he may sometime, snap and turns to children?
if worst case scenario happens and after a few days they don't get along together, go and find another kitten to rescue (most times, an older cat will accept a younger one because there is no rivalry). tell him you have picked a new kitten, he is to get anything that has to be done, done and the kitten is to be brought to you... or you are going to report him. taking hannibal to someone you can trust is a very good idea... and you are right it will be a learning experience for the little girl, but maybe it will teach her father a lesson or two.
if you can't find anyone else and have to leave him there, i know it stil doesn't solve the problem of knowing hannibal is "around the corner" and it must tear you apart, at least you will know you have tried, honestly and without devastating an innocent child, which is something that certainly did nor occur to him, obviously. grrrrrrr
you have enormous heart and a good head on your shoulders.
people like you give me faith that there is still good left in humanity. i am glad to have met you. smile

Listen, I have 2 cats, AND 2 kids... one of them being a tantrum throwing 4 year old at times... I would NEVER allow something like that. GET YOUR CAT BACK. Tell the people that you will not report it as long as you get your cat. I am far from mean 7 cold Especially when it comes to kids & animals.. NO WAY should they have YOUR CAT. I know you fel bad for the little girl... But there are millions of cats that need good homes. They can adopt one. OH HELL NO. You're a better person then I am Darkness..I am a firm believer in treat others as we would like to be treated, and hey.. if you stole their cat..I can promise.. they wouldn't be so nice. GO GET YORU CAT... & as for the the 2 cats.. keep a door closed for a week, and let them get to know eachother thru the door crack first. They will be fine in about 1-2 weeks. My cat Rocky was 4 before I even thought of a 2nd cat, and when I brought home Vito... The first day was HELL... I left Vito in a room with the door shut, they kept smelling & even hissing thru the door.. after a few days i introduced them again.. Things got better, I put Vito back in the room.. after another few days.. did the same.. within2 weeks, they were cuddled up together in my bed. Now they are inseperable. It will be fine, but it won't happen over night.. keep one in a room, & it will work out.
