For some reason, some parakeets tend to talk, while others start mimicing thier owners. It can be from the bird's vocal ability. Lucien is actually attempting to say something, not sure what yet, but something... I just talk to him, using the same words over and over again. "Pretty bird or Pretty boy" And he will just listen and then reply.

Your little guy is smart. My Sweetie is a good talker too. I noticed when he was little he would kinda close his eyes when I taught him words. I think he did a kind of concentration thing when he was listening. Sweetie likes to be close to our mouths also. I wondered if he was kinds catching the way the air puffed out when we spoke. Like speach therapists teach the deaf to talk.

My Pritty only mimicks sounds, like the kissing sound.

I believe your bird will most likely start talking by mimicking sounds it hears often, and then if you work hard enough and long enough, it might start talking words.

I have 10 keets and tried to teach a few to talk but sort of gave up on the idea when I read somewhere that if you had more than one keet they probably would not talk. Well it looks like what I read was not quite true in all cases as some of you have more than one bird that talks. We do have a tiel who says pretty bird but said that before we bought him. I'm trying to get him to say more and practice with him daily but no luck just yet. I think I made a mistake and started to teach him to whistle a song so now he does this (gets it sort of mixed up) but whenever I start saying good boy to him he immediately starts saying pretty bird. As soon as I start saying good he starts saying pretty bird.
Males are suppose to be the good talkers however I have heard of people having females who also talk.

Something interesting that my Sweetie did was turn a bird call into human words. He did this about 4 months ago. It goes
"Adedle dedle dee" "Adedle dedle dee" He isn't singing a bird song he is saying a word that sounds like a bird song. Then he goes Smack Smack Smack and bobs his three times. He made this up with no help.
