Had a strange one this week end, had a bottle which the maker said was Salmon Pink in colour, to me it looked yellow, which made me think had a bad one.

Most strange when opened & poured it was Salmon Pink, maker had put it in a green bottle which distorted colour, has any one come across this ?

I have all sorts of feelings on colored bottles.

One, I think they're really cool and I collect them. So I especially like dark blue bottles.

But I also think, logically, they're a royal pain in the butt because you can't see the color of the wine. I think it's fair to be able to see a wine's color before you buy it.

What type of wine was it, that they said it should be salmon pink?

Have figured it out.

Wine Label has " DOLE BLANCHE" which would make one think, white wine.

If maker had used a plain glass, on the shelf wine would shown content as being Salmon Pink, which might put off people looking for Blance/White Wine.

By going for Green bottle one could mot make out the true colour.

Still cannot figure out why it is called Dole Blance when made from same grapes as used in Dole.

Thing is, wine may be negatively impacted by light. That's why the vast majority of premium wines are sold in green or brown bottles.

As for Dole Blanche, you may recall our discussion of White Cabernet, White Merlot and White Zinfandel. Although it turned out that indeed someone has hybridized the Cabernet Sauvignon to a white grape, generally speaking,prefacing a red wine grape name with the word "white" means the wine will be pink.

Since "furriners" often put their adjectives after the subject, Dole Blanche operates the same as White Zin.

I read that Dole is a red wine, a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir. It makes sense that Dole Blanche would be pink.

Oh certainly I understand the protect-the-wine idea - we did a test with beer and light can skunk a beer in under 15 minutes! It's pretty spectacular. Still there must be some sort of a middle ground where they have a paper bag wrapper - but you can still see the wine. Maybe a window of clear glass on it?

Brom, Where I agree with part what you are saying.

Why not use word Rosewiene Dole, as no indication is given to grapes used on label, I would say vast majority of people seeing Blanche on a wine label, presume is going to be White Wine. Rose people know its going to be a pink wine.

I feel not a lot of people are going to know with out first reading about it a Dole AOC or Dole Du Valais is Meduim Red of Gamay & Pinot Noir.

Having tried a Dole saw the Dole Blanche thought would give it a try.

At same time from same supplier brought Humagne Blanche which was white, thought a Dole Blanche would be same colour.

Of course some premium wines come in clear glass (most or all white zinfandels for one)- to me most notably Sauternes and some other sweet whites. I have to guess to allow the owner to watch the progression of color as the wine ages. Thinking about a half-bottle 1990 Guiraud I just saw the other day.

I must say that I am more than surprised by this. My guess would be that you performed the test on a beer which was "skunked" when you started. (Oh, and I know me some skunk beer, having bought much Knickerbocker beer in the 1980s - average was one bad bottle per six).

The main reason I doubt the widespread accuracy of your findings is that I have drunk many the beer which has sat in the sun more than 15 minutes. No longer cold and delicious, but nowhere near skunked (gone bad) either. So while it may have occurred during your experiment, I don't think we can say that this generally true of beer.

At the same time I don't suggest storing one's beer in the sun. Keep that case of returnables down the cellar.

This is my gripe label only had makers name & Dole Blanche, just not used to Brown Bottles.

You mentioned Guiraud, I have been trying to buy up the Château De L Orange Cadillac Art Collection wanted the box set, have the Renoir, very nice.

Ah, Cadillac. I can't remember the last time I saw one in the market. I remember "back in the day" - Cadillacs, Loupiacs, Monbaizillac, St Croix du Monts - all available for around $5.
