Wine News Magazine: Proprietary Shiraz - Australia's Best of Show

I found this article after a discussion with some friends about the seemingly poor reputation Australian wines have in the USA.

I'm not sure they were correct about that, but I could understand that if Americans based their opinions on the mega-market brands like Yellowtail that they were certainly getting the wrong impression. Sure Australia makes a lot of plonk, but then so does France, Italy, and of course the USA.

The article, while quite old (2002 I think), discusses some of the Australian Icon wines. I hope it whets your taste buds a bit.

That's very odd, Harold - I would guess that everyone I know has a strong appreciation of Australian wines. I would never guess that people had a "poor reputation" of Australian wines! Sure there are some cheap wines from Australia but there are cheap wines from everywhere in the world. Australia makes some awesome high end wines as well as many good values.

Are there forum visitors who feel that Australian wines are by and large "poor"?
