I am thrilled that I get to visit Champagne soon, and I have always wanted to go to Portugal to visit the homeland of Port. I *adore* port. I think that would be a dangerous trip though because port is high in alcohol and I'd want to be trying many of them every day.

What regions have you always dreamed of visiting?

I would love to spend a week in Napa Valley.

Napa Valley is really lovely! I love it there, and in Sonoma. The wineries are all in a row so it's easy to visit a lot of them in one weekend.

One of my college rommates just visited one of the Newport RI vineyards, have you toured those? Seems like a fun thing to do since it's so close

Been to Napa, but years ago (1981) couldn't tell you what vineyards (especially after all the tastings:-)

Yes there are four wineries in Rhode Island -

three of them are down in that Newport area - they are in Middletown, Portsmouth and Little Compton. The fourth is up north in Cumberland.

Sakonnet in Little Compton is the largest winery in New England and well worth visiting! They make a lot of wine there.

When I saw the topic title, I was going to say Champagne.

Lisa,
You're going to Champagne and didn't invite me! That is my favorite beverage.

We've been to Portugal and enjoyed it. One custom that I particularly liked was that they serve a dry white port as an apertif. I've bought white ports here since, but they just don't have the character of the Portugese white port. We had stayed in posadas - updated monasteries, castles, and nunneries - all gorgeous, steeped in history. Before dinner, we'd sit in a perfectly appointed room, and the waiter would bring a cordial glass of white port and place it on a starched and folded white linen napkin for us to enjoy. Very elegant. Thanks for reminding me of that.

Peter, I'll be out in Seattle in the end of June, you should come out and we could head north smile

Ann - Wait, what happened to the broken car? smile

If I ever got Bob out to Portugal I imagine we'd opt for the more comfortable route, a little travel hotel where we could just plunk into bed grimy from trekking in the vineyards and not worry about things. I feel nervous in the more fancy hotels if I've been out trekking in mud all day ... just our angle on things! I always worry about bringing in mud and my clothes being dirty and such.
