parakeet sleeping on food bowl - 09/21/06 10:42 PM

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum, and would like some advice. I am the proud mother of Coby and Pico, and of course Riley (the cat). I adopted Coby in November of last year and in March (06), I took Pico in out of a neglected home. Coby and I have a WONDERFUL bond. I have spent the last several months trying to establish the same rapport with Pico. My efforts began paying off about 3 months ago, and he is finally "coming out of his shell," and talking, cuddling, etc. For the last 3 days, however, he has begun sleeping on his food bowl. I don't know if he is just afraid he is going to run out of food (we have 4 bowls that are changed daily), or if there may be something wrong. None of his other behaviors have changed and I just wanted to see if anyone else thought this behavior is odd. I have never encountered this before, even through all of my research and experience. I would greatly appreciate any help. (They will both be one year old on Saturday and we don't want to be sick for our birthday party).

First of all, kudos for adopting. smile I always love to see homeless animals go to a new home. My birds like to sleep on the edge of their water bowl, I don't think it's anything wrong, it's just a comfy spot.

I have a quaker who slept hanging on to his food dish all night, but only for the first month or so. Now that he's comfortable, he's found a more appropriate sleeping place.

Thanks for your answers everyone. I just wanted to be sure. I don't know what I would do if something happened to one of my babies. He did not sleep on it last night, so maybe you are right. It is his favorite bowl and the main one that he eats out of so maybe he just likes to keep a careful watch over it.....
Thanks again for your replies
