Mating and separation...?

Mating and separation...? - 04/17/07 09:18 PM

I really can't breed budgies right now, and I know it's mating season. All four of my parakeets have paired off boy-girl boy-girl, and are very attached. I've bought multivitamin supplements as well as Peak Health Formula calcium supplement to add in with their veggies and fruit to help prevent egg-binding just in case.

I was wondering though, which is the better method? Separation, or discarding the eggs as they come? I don't like either option, but I know I need to do something, and I'm trying to find the least traumatic method for my budgieboos that I can.

Well, you could just take all nesting materials, and nesting boxes out, and just buy a WHOLE BUNCH of white marbles. As the eggs come, just replace them with the white marbles.

that's probably the least-stressful option. =]

Won't a lack of nesting spots cause egg binding due to the budgie avoiding laying the egg? I have no nesting materials whatsoever, so I have nothing to get rid of smile

It'll discourage her to lay. She will probably eventually stop...

note to everyone: this is the situations that can be avoided by seperating the sexes! =]

Thanks smile

Honestly I thought I had all boys...I only recently found out otherwise. I was aiming to buy all boys so I wouldn't have to worry about egg binding at all, but when you buy them as young as they were when I got them...well...yeah tired

This is the part where I reiterate that I'm a tard.

But, again, thanks for all your help. One day I'll breed, and I'll have all of your posts printed out as a guide smile

Isn't that the purpose of the board? grin Hehe. Yeah, that's what I was concerned about too. We've got mites, I've changed their cage layout within the past week...plus they're crazy bonded so...I'm off to wal mart tomorrow to buy a big bag of white marbles! laugh
