I really want to start letting Elkie out of the cage sense I think shes trained enough to start that step. She doesn't run from my hand anymore, she'll eat from it, and get real close to me when I talk to her.. cries for me when I leave, ect.. and it's been sense.. Nov. 21st, she took longer to train than most birds. But anyway.. I want to let her out now, but in my room there are things she can go under. Three dressers (they stand off the ground about as high as she is) and she can get behind my bed (not under).. so I want to know if thats a big probelm. Are they like hampsers? When they get away they dont try to come back (like mine did anyway ;-; ) will Elkie come back if she goes under there or stay and hide? I plan on cleaning under everything real good before I let her out so that she doesnt get into dusk/something to eat/chew on.. but I DONT WANT HER TO RUN AND HIDE ;-; .. I was thinking of letting her out in the hall and putting something in front of the door way, but her wings are longer now and she can fly higher. Would hanging a blanket over the door/my dressers be a good idea?

Daisy doesn't try to run and hide under things that much because she likes to stay up on higher things like on my desk or dresser. And most parakeets will probably like to be up higher unless their wings are clipped then they'll be crawling on the ground. When she does go behind something she will come out because she usually doesn't just sit there on the ground. Like, my hamster she will crawl under things and sit there or try to dig the carpet. (old carpet anyway)

Sounds like she's pretty attached to you, so at this point she may not run and hide under stuff. She may just hang around you instead. If she does run under something or whatever, just put out your finger and call her name, and she should probably come. They don't like to be in cramped conditions so she would probably be happy to see a way out. But if you watch her really good when she's out, it shouldn't be a problem, cuz if she starts to go somewhere she shouldn't, you can just scoop her up and put her somewhere else that is okay for her. But yeah, as long as you watch her it should be okay. Sounds like she's definitely ready to come out. Good luck! smile smile

First day out wasnt so bad. I got her out on my finger then she waited a minute and flew off and flapped around on the floor a bit before she seen her cage and climbed ontop of it.. I gave her a piece of millet and after a little while she started looking around and then climbed down and went back in her cage :p

My only concern would be if she got stuck, and she wanted to come out but couldn't. If she got stuck, is there a way you could move the furniture to free her without crushing her? Just to be on the safe side, i think I would push some towels under the furniture so she won't be able to get into those tight spaces.

I made sure my bed was pulled out from the wall so she cant get stuck there, and cant go under it.. i hung a blanket over one of my dressers and the other one is up off the floor so the under part is taller than she is. I double checked and I dont think she can get stuck anywhere

Just a tip, you don'e have to hang it from stuff (if that is a bother) you can just stuff blankets in cracks smile
