Welcome to the forums!

Yes, absolutely birds will breathe heavily if they are nervous or scared. I would do my very best to ensure your bird has a quiet, calm place to rest, is covered at night, and has someone to talk to during the day. If the breathing doesn't ease after a day or two it's time to go to the vet.
