Our parakeet was very sick and had been experiencing seizure activities. I have nursed him back to health and he is almost back to normal. He no longer stays puffed up, eats, drinks and preens himself as usual. I suspected there may be a vitamin deficiency because he refuses to eat fruit and so on. I began putting a couple of drops of apple cider vinegar in his water and purchased sprinkle on vitamins. He had no respiratory issues that I could tell. Anyway, he is now climbing around his cage but still a bit unbalanced. I have lowered his perches ext to keep him from falling. He has been doing well for about 3 days now. I just wondered how long if ever will it take him to recover? Or if there is anything else I should be doing for him.

Have you taken him to a vet to be examined? Seizures are serious things. He needs to be examined by a professional. He might have a nutritional deficiency. One of the high quality pellet diets like Harris would be good. Give him some veggies, like broccoli buds and spinach. I would not put vinegar in his water, but I would give him purified water and organic food.

And definitely I cannot emphasize enough--the little bird needs to see a vet.

Good luck.

Sprinkle on vitamins don't work well because parakeets hull their seeds. All those vitamins just fall on the cage floor. You need to train your keets to eat fresh food and pellets. Yes, they don't do it right away. It's a training process and well worth it!
