Yesterday I had to rush my 9 year female parakeet to the emergency vet because she was bleeding.I didn't know the cause, just came home and there was blood everywhere. Turns out she has a tumor right under her tail feather above her bum.
She is at the vet's hospital in their care being monitored and treated to control the blood and give her medications, etc. She has not had any more bleeding and the wound formed a scab.
On Monday we will decide the course of action for treatment. As I understand it, we can treat her with medication and send her home for hospice care for however long she lives; sedate her to clean the area and get an idea if the tumor can be surgically removed; full anesthesia and removal of tumor (if possible).
At this point, I'm a complete basket case and crying all the time. I would appreciate it if the parakeet community could give me their thoughts on possible sedation and/or anesthesia, surgery.
I have not made any decisions. That will depend on my conversation with the vet on Monday.
Please help! I want do what's best for my baby.
Thank you so much.
