Mites are very very small and they are really hard to see and catch.

Have you tried placing white paper on her cage. Mites will usually be red and/or brown. You can also use a small microscope to get a better look.

Also has your bird been scratching excessively or more than usual??

By the way if you suspect your bird has mites bring it to the vet don't use a mite protector or such they can be bad for your bird.

Yes, if you suspect mites please see a vet. 'mite protectors' do nothing and the sprays they make have chemicals that are not only bad for you but are things you really shouldnt soak your bird in.

It sounds like you may actually be seeing a keratin. It's the casing of a feather and you will usually see a LOT of them when they are molting. The can be all different sizes, but they are usually small; look kind of like flakes of dandriff? They're white. However if your seeing brown or red things, you should get to a vet asap to get him tested/treated for mites.

Marion:

It sounds to me like your bird is molting and you are seeing the tips of pin feathers coming out of his head (in the head, right?). On my bird they look like little black dots at first.

This is what it sounds like, but obviously we can't know for sure.

It is unusual for birds kept inside to get mites.
