It's been so long, I don't know if there's anyone still on here that remembers me. But my little guy, Nene, died in my hands last night.
When I got home from work, I noticed that he was lethargic, could barely keep his eyes open to look at me, and wasn't even responding to his friend in the mirror.
I also noticed that he seemed a little wobbly, and he was coughing up a clear fluid. I rushed him to the vet for an emergency after hours visit.
They gave him a complete physical, which came out normal. They also did a gram stain on his droppings, which also came back normal.
The only thing that they could see was that he was a little dehydrated, so they gave him some fluids. After all that, the poor little guy was so stressed that she didn't want to take blood from him, so she just gave him an injection of antibiotic and sent him home with me. I was to keep a close eye on him for the next 24-48 hours.
He seemed to be perked up for a little bit--he was chewing on the millet the doctor gave him, and trying to cuddle up to me from inside his carrier.
But on the cab ride home, he seemed to deteriorate, so that by the time I got back to my apartment, he wasn't really able to stand, and he kept flapping his wings slowly like he was trying to fly, but it wasn't happening.
At that point, I kind of knew that it was only a matter of time, so I just cuddled up with him and a soft blanket, and we watched a show (he loves the sound of television).
About an hour to an hour and a half later, his breathing became more labored (he had been breathing quickly, but now he was kind of gasping), until finally, he had a convulsion that lasted about 30 seconds, and died.
I'm not sure what happened--he was probably sick for a while and hid it from me--but I'm thinking it may have been something respiratory. His little feet went kind of purple during the last couple of minutes.
But he will definitely be missed. I'm taking him to be cremated today. My heart is broken. He was about 6 or 7 years old. Here's a video of him eating some basil, one of his favorite things to do:
hi...sorry that this is what brought you back to the forum and hope you will stick around some...but your right i for myself dont remember you...must be your before my time here but maybe some of the others will...
im sure your bird had a very happy life while here and sorry as well at the outcome...we all know that day will come for them and us but it never makes it any easier...
I am so sorry. Its a hard thing to loose a pet. I lost my little Shih Tzu Keltsy in much the same way. Had the emergency vet on the phone all weekend but she just kept trying to convince me my pup was not as bad as I thought. She died in bed with me that night. We just don't get to keep them long enough... Your bird was beautiful and I'm sure loved. And now will be missed.
i sometimes leave a bit of food outside as a offering to the pets ive lost...it helps...when the food disappears imagine it was them that came for it as ill leave it where i buried them. its a native thing...
I think that's a beautiful custom, Ilussive. LoraX,little Nene was such a cute little guy. So curious and fun. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I sure wish the vet could have given you a better idea of what happened. (hugs) And Lady Vyz, I'm still thinking of you and little Dickie. Hope you're feeling a bit better.
I remember you but I am not on here much these days. Sorry for your loss, I have lost several of my babies over the years and I know how heartbreaking it is.
