Today CeeCee is much better. Third visit to Dr. Mertz at NE Wildlife yesterday. Still getting antibiotic shots in the leg for one more week. She is gaining weight slowly. Did not realize she had gone all the way down to 25 grams at first, that is what he had in his notes.
Talked with him some more about this infection, I am glad I went to him because he said he has seen this same infection that attacks the joints in chickens, geese, doves, ducks and cockatiels (in one leg) but never in a parakeet. He said it really takes a long time of very aggressive treatment but they do get better!

wow when was she down to 25 thats a big drop from what was it 33 you said...???

so did he narrow down the type of infection as does he still believe it was a skeeter bite??? or brought about by possibly something else???

swelling must be going down nicely too thats soooo wonderful dani...

do you have to still keep doing the medicine as well???

thanks for keeping us alllll posted about this too...maybe help with some of us being more observing to our birds before something really gets out of hand but of course that would mean immediately going to a avian vet as well and of course you know too many delay on that ...but not youuuuuuu

He still doesn't know how she got it, a mosquito bite is the way he thought she might have, other birds have got it from cuts or wounds but she doesn't have that. I have to keep giving medicine for another week then evaluate. The swelling has gone down some, but he said sometimes the legs just stay that way I hope this is not the case. He had written down 25 grams on first exam.

But seeing her in a snapshot fashion as he described it he was able to see some progress he thought she looked brighter and sitting up better.

ok well some of that weight loss had to also be due then to the stress of getting ready to move then the actual move itself ...coupled with not feeling well of course.

ok another question ...if the legs are going to stay this way maybe...how the heck would ya know if its better/ gone/ or still as bad?

i would also hope this isnt the case because it would be difficult to know these things...

I don't know. Definitely she is behaving more of herself today, moving around, preening, chirping and not quite as fluffed and droopy as she was and she's on a perch not on the bottom. Im letting her spend some time with serenade because it seems to motivate her, and he preens her face where she got the orange juice stuck ( which I mix with the medicine). She was such a sad sticky face!

welllll thats super duper great news and im sure it puts your mind at ease more now too...to be honest...i didnt think she would make it either...good thing you got prompt help without delay...otherwise the outcome could of been entirely different...
