I am researching this for a class i am taking. Although I do have two parakeets i am not sure if it is a myth or a proven scientific fact that birds do have a sense of smell....... Each and all comments will be greatly appreciated.

well its only my theory but ...i believe any animal with nostrils in this case thats what ill call them...do have a sense of smell however, that being said...the degree of smell is in proportion to the length of nose...ie:horses, deer, etc would have a much keener sense of smell because of the length of the nose to process these aromas...as persay to something as small as our keets.

I'm sure my keet can smell because he complains every time I cook eggs for breakfast, no kidding, he hates that smell. Here is a link to an abstract of an academic article on avian sense of smell:

Our little birdies seem to have POOR developed senses of SMELL & TASTE.
And for the wild birds ( flying in the air) 'smells often leave
quickly in the air. Birds have fewer taste buds than we do.
Like more on the roof 'of mouth? not in the tongue.
Poor sense to taste BUT great sense of sight & hearing.
Maybe the cooking ( hearing the cooking?) But I doubt smile

Could be RE: cooking the egg? The pan it is cooked in.
We must be very careful not to use teflon pans ect. eek DANGER
You can read more about that on line. Very bad for birds.

But sometimes I swear my birds smells things smile As a caring
owner I TRY to cook ahead of time before 'getting my bird up'
I try to think how 'I feel when I smell certain foods'
Sometimes turning on a small fan helps circulate air ect.

To that end, I had a bird once WHO wasn't feeling good one day.
When I made coffee the bird SQUAWKED (like letting me know)
and I so I thought she could smell the coffee. So I try to
use common sense 'the best I can' SO we're always learning
about our chirpy cheeky little friends aren't we? grin

So maybe NOT the EGG? Maybe the PAN. The Teflon CAN KILL
them instantly OMG. Of course I would have thought (like you)
The egg but 'No So I guess the birds have a sense of smell?
But maybe NOT a very good sense of smell. Though we must
watch out for FUMES and bad for the birds. there's alot to learn.

My parakeet smells like the food he eats. When he eats spagetti and sauce, he smells like garlic. When he eats celery, that's what he smells like. The celery is nice, but not the spagetti saude.

Copied from the site posted above.....
Yet the apparatus for detecting odors is present in the nasal passages of all birds.

This tells me they do smell maybe on different levels or sensitivity but they do smell...my reasoning to this is this...through evolution that which is no longer used disappears with each subsequent generation...until...certain things which were there and used, is no longer or has been modified...

Seeing how the apparatus is present in the nasal passages of ALL birds i would then have to summonize that ...YES they do have the capability to smell.

Well from what i know. Most all birds have a sense of smell. Including parakeets. i learded this visiting many sites. Oh, and if any of u ever need or want to just learn info about anything, the best place to go to is a site called wiki, i wouldnt recemend wiki answers if u ever come across it. but to get there, u eather go to wiki.com or wiki/what ever u what to look up. Antways, even tho most birds have smell they cant smell things very well, its a very weak sense. so, i think the only why they could really smell something is if its a very strong smell or if its right next to them.
