Help!

I was woken up at 3:00 in the morning by my cat yowling madly. I tried to calm her down, thinking she merely wanted attention. She continued and after a short while we drove to the vet. The vet said my cat had a blood clot blocking a major and 3 minor arteries! He said that the operation would cost $750 and my mom was unwilling to pay and would have preferred cry euthanizing cry poor Mashka! I immediately gave my personal savings to save her! I am very happy she is better now. However, the vet says such incidents can happen up to 5 times, and I have no more money for the operations (my mom will then euthanise Mashka)! Besides that, she is behaving oddly, she wont eat, use her litterbox and runs away from everyone! Any help or ideas? Please????

Oh man Katsnkeets, I am so sorry. How awful! Was Mashka acting weird prior to this?? I would have given up my savings too. You did the right thing, doing everything in your power to save her. How very unselfish of you. How old are you anyway?? That's quite the vet fund/savings you had there. smile
Did the vet say anything about how she might act when you got her home...or things to be aware of that might mean trouble?? You should call the vet and tell them about her behavior.Probably normal response as she's been through so much, but ya never know.
Are there meds to keep blood from clotting like there is for people?
Mashka is such a beautiful cat.
You hang in there, and let us know how she's doing ok. I hope things go well and she has a speedy recovery and no relapses.

Thanks for the support kksuns smile

The vet said nothing about possible unusual behavior, however I did get some medicine to help her recover from the operation, but she won't eat the anti-clotting medicine frown. I called the vet and he said that there might be some erratic behavior but it should stop after a week or so (he said it is just stress from the operation). I was really surprised that such a young healthy cat would experience such a serious condition so early in her life (my friend's cat only had a blood clot at 13, and Mashka is 7.)
Once again, thanks for your support smile!

P.S. I'm 15 years old, I work for a property management company in the summer, for a measly pay of $6 an hour, but it's still income! Those aren't vet savings by the way, they're the last of my funds, because I'm investing in a keet. This keet purchase suffered a major setback, because I'm broke and it's not summer! Back to the old days of helping my mom at work smile !

That's great news! Hope she continues to improve and lives a loooong and happy life.
Is she on any meds to prevent further clotting? Did you find out if there is such a thing?

Yes, there are blood thinners which can be used for cats but Mashka sternly refuses any sort of medicine... suggestions?

Can you put her meds in her water dish, mixed with some kind of broth? or mixed in with tuna?

I will be interested to see if that works for your Mashka. Hope it does!

This must be really hard for both you and kitty, bearing in mind that she just had surgery! You can't really put her through the stress of forcing her to do much! Toweling could help I suppose, if she didn't fight it much, but here again we have the stress.

i wonder if the meds could be given in an injection? I myself don't know how to do that, but I've heard it is easily learned. Maybe you could discus that with your mom and/or vet. Perhaps our mom could do that?
