For a while now, I've been washing my birds' dishes with a solution of cider vinegar and hot water and nothing else. No soap. I fill a bowl with scalding hot water, dump in cider vinegar (or sometimes grapefruit seed extract) and the dirty food and water dishes. I wash them with a sponge and rinse in plain tap water. Is this kosher? Should I be using soap? Am I cleaning their stuff well enough?

Every week I scrub the keets' wood perches with the cider vinegar and hot water solution and then put them in the oven for 40 minutes at 250 degrees. Again, is this a correct procedure?

Thank you.

you are doing great. I see no reason to put them in the oven.

I've read that you shouldn't get the wood perches wet, so I use sandpaper on mine. Should I be washing them?

I just take a brush (just for the birds) and run hot water on the perches then scrub them with the brush, dry with a cloth and return. I suspect sandpaper works just fine, but washing them is really easy. The second the poop gets wet - off it comes.

Wood perches have to be dried thoroughly. That's why I put them in the oven for 40 minutes at a low heat. Or in the sun during the summer.

I think acv/water is just fine. And blumom you are right-wood perches have to be totally dry before putting them back in cage.
I sometimes just use sandpaper on the wood perches, and sometimes i use the acv/water and scrub. And then dry in oven or sun smile
Oh and drying in the hot sun is good. It actually is a good way to further disinfect!

Thanks kksuns. I was getting nervous about just the water/ acv combo. Sometimes I just dump straight acv on my special keet sponge and wash their dishes with that. Then I rinse of course;)

No prob blumom smile If you worry about it..you can wash them in hot soapy water now and then and rinse really well. I do sometimes.
With dishes and toys I usually let them soak in acv/ hot water for 15-20 mins in a big bowl I use just for their stuff. It's handy to have extra dishes and toys to use while others are being cleaned.
