One way to work from home which is VERY easy is to sell your used books on Amazon. It's completely free to set up and very easy to operate!
You just log into your Amazon account - which is free to create - and go to the page of any book you own. There'll be a button right on that page to sell your used book.
I put up a few books last week. I've already sold and sent one, and I got an order for another of my books today!
So all I do is pop the book in the mail, and Amazon plunks money into my bank account a few days later. It's super easy!
Highly recommended. Post here if you'd like help with any of the steps.

That sounds almost too easy. Any downsides? What kind of money do you end up with, like a buck or two?

It is very easy. I do it myself, they just charge 99 cents per book. You keep the rest. =) They even give you shipping costs.

I sold a copy of
Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium
that James (my son) had read and not wanted any more.
I listed the price at $4.19 which is what it sold at.
Buyer's Price: $4.19 Shipping Credit: $3.99 Amazon Commission: $-2.97 Your Earnings: $5.21
So they charged $2.97 as their commission. I imagine it might be a sliding scale based on the sale price of the book.
Their shipping credit was $3.99. It was $2.38 for media mail postage, plus about 50 cents say for the envelope I sent it in.

The second book I sold was a copy of
Women and Gender in Early Modern Europe (New Approaches to European History)
this was one of James' college books.
I listed the price at $12.95 which it sold at.
Buyer's Price: $12.95 Shipping Credit: $3.99 Amazon Commission: $-4.28 Your Earnings: $12.66
Again, the Amazon fee was much more than 99 cents - but it was apparently because the sale price was higher as well. Again, this went media mail so it was $2.38 for the mailing postage, and perhaps 50 cents for the envelope it was shipped in.

Wow, that does sound like a simple and easy way to get rid of books and make some extra cash. I do have a lot of books i can sell.
Any ideas what types of books to try first? Does it matter what condtions they are in? Novels, non-fiction?

I hate to get rid of books, but there may well be some that I could sell on.

I just sold a third book, this was a cheap one and if you look at the price info it's very interesting - Item: Regarding the Pain of Others [Paperback] by Sontag, Susan Condition: Used - Like New Condition Note: slight reside from price stickers on back cover Listing ID: 1207E7ZSX5P SKU: SV-N9PE-1MCT Quantity: 1 Order date: 12/07/2009 Buyer's Price: $2.75 Shipping Credit: $3.99 Amazon Commission: $-2.75 Your Earnings: $3.99 so below a certain point you don't earn money from the book sale - but their shipping credit is high enough that you'll still be making money. PDM - I still have MANY bookcases of books in the house. I am only starting to make a dent, these are James' college books I'm getting rid of

Jill - you list the condition, you put in whatever shape it is in. It's SUPER easy to list them so I'd go into Amazon, search for a few books you own, and look at what they're going for in the used column. I always list mine a few pennies below whatever the cheapest one is.
So I'd start with the ones that you really don't want at all and go from there.

This does sound super easy. I have a HUGE HUMONGOUS stack of books to enter in. I think I will save it for after the holidays, so I won't overwhelm myself with too many new tasks. Right now I am concentrating on: - getting my home stuff in order (from storage #1 - the nnow-empty AZ one) we have many bins everywhere... - my new hobby of can recycling - starting to meditate - getting ahead through the holidays on articles for my blog topic I will be very excited to start listing books and sending them out. It sounds much more profitable than trying to sell them at all the used bookstores.

OK I do want to warn not to list items for one penny If you have the uber selling account it might be worth it, but for a standard account it isn't. I just sold this - Item: Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous [Paperback] by George Berkeley... Condition: Used - Like New Condition Note: Only the tiniest of curl on the bottom right corner Listing ID: 1207E7ZRYLJ SKU: M9-DUO8-JSLS Quantity: 1 Order date: 12/15/2009 Buyer's Price: $0.01 Shipping Credit: $3.99 Amazon Commission: $-2.34 Your Earnings: $1.66 Another one of James' college books. My earnings were $1.66. The postage on it was $2.09. So I lost money on the sale It was a lesson to learn! So somewhere in there is the break even point, in terms of what you charge the person.

I've sold several more books since that posting, I can't emphasize enough how EASY this is. It's only a few clicks to put a book into the system and then you get email notes when they have sold. The shelf of books I had going to Amazon is now down to only 5 left. I'm ready to add some more in!

Mainly I am waiting until after I deal with my CA storage (we wilo i think go next week or something soonish), so i will be in town when things sell. I hate to have to come home and see that i am behind mailing things out. I also have not been to the post office here in this town yet. Need to find it.

How are you shipping the books - bubble lined envelopes? And how quickly are you supposed to have them get out from notification?

Yes, I agree, Lisa. I looked up several books that I have, and saw that they were going for a penny (for the condition that I have). So I figured that even if I made a few pennies on the shipping, it was not really worth the effort to mail them.

Jilly, to answer your questions, I've been trying lately to buy the cheap bubble envelopes from CVS or something. They're usually a dollar or two. They also sell envelopes at the post office. It's up to you.
And I would send Media Mail. Priority mail will take you above the shipping costs that Amazon reimburses you for!
I just sold one of my history books for $101. Got $91 after amazon commission. =) Took Steve out to dinner. It was a nice treat.

I buy cheap bubble mailers in bulk, they get pretty cheap. And yes I tend to send them media mail. To me the 50 cents or dollar are well worth it, to get the book out of the house - plus it helps your rating, remember, so that then helps you when you sell larger priced items

Do you wrap the books in something waterproof, or are the bubble mailers sufficient?
And I checked and the books are supposed to be mailed within a day or two. So you really need to be at home a lot.

The bubble mailers are fine. It's up to the person and the postal system to keep things dry. After all, checks are mailed all the time and they aren't mailed in hermetically sealed waterproof boxes Yes you are supposed to mail promptly. So you simply turn off your sales items if you have to go out of town, and turn them back on when you return.

I think maybe I can try selling a few at a time, like five at first. Should I try different genres, or stick to one and pick from there? Fiction or non?
I know I have a zillion inconsequential questions, but i do not have the mental energy to futz with things if I need to move back into my RV in a month. Thanks, everyone.

In your situation I would sell the most expensive items first. Get the most bang for the buck. It doesn't matter at all what categories they fall in.

What I do is I just do quick searches by ISBN or UPC on amazon to see what other people are selling them for. If it's worth selling, I put it up, if not, I go to the next book.

James' textbooks sold really quickly but the few remaining ones are languishing on there. I'll have to check if other people have dropped their prices lower than mine so I'm no longer on the top, and play that price game to get them out of the house.
