There is a ton of money diverted into fertility research, so this kinda of thing might not be far off. Many people are so desperate for children that they willingly spend tens of thousands of dollars for a chance to bear young.

I'm surprised they aren't there yet. It would solve so many problems. We wouldn't have abortions any more, the child would be offered to a new family. We wouldn't have multi-year adoption waits any more, there would be children available. I agree there might still be a few abortions in medically necessary situations, but those will always happen.

The time it would take for the placenta to "reattach" the fetus would suffocate. Remember, you can only go without oxygen for something like 3 minutes. The surgery alone would take at least 30 (I'm thinking of how long it takes to sew in an aortal graft - JUST the sewing in part, not including the flushing, testing, or anything else).
I would imagine a tiny fetus could not even go THAT long without O2.

I would imagine we have machines that allow artificial blood flow with all the operations we do. What if they began by attaching the placenta to an artificial blood flow? Then they could take their time moving it around properly, settling it into the new location, and then the final step would be simply to move the blood flow off the machine and onto the new "host".

Also if we start down that path of reasoning, we should be able to create an entirely artificial womb, one that has blood flow going in and out, and an adjustable 'shell' that grows over time to hold the placenta in the correct shape.

I like the idea that it could be completely outside of a body, actually. The idea of growing a baby without all the pains and discomforts sounds appealing. I still would not want a child, however.

I know it's just words, but the phrase "growing a baby" brought to mind the concerns I had with this whole idea. It heads down the Matrix path of growing fields of babies for "use" ...
