I've been asked by many members recently how to keep their web accounts secure - both here in our forums as well as in their other accounts.

The key is always to *set a high quality password*. If your password is simply "password" or another one-word name, then hackers will very easily get into your account!

Passwords should have letters, numbers and if possible a special character. So for example never make a password of "password" or your username. It should always be something like

orange47eggplant!

A password like that would be very secure and the chances of your account being hacked is close to zero.

Also, don't use your same password for all of your accounts. That will lead to great trouble. Instead, keep a list of your passwords, a different one for each account. If you keep this list in Word, make sure you password protect your Word document! That way all your passwords stay secure and safe.

Being safe on the web is something we should all know how to do. It is fairly easy, as long as you set high quality passwords for each account, and never share those passwords with anyone.

Let me know if you have any questions!

What exactly would be the worry on this site? Ive seen a lot of posts related to security and personal information but i don't see how anything people put in their account information could be anymore personal then what some people put in their posts?

I agree completely, General Disarray. If you're going to point someone at your MySpace page, it doesn't matter how you do it. You could put the link in your profile, in a post, in your signature. Any way someone gets to your MySpace page, they could try to guess your password. As a responsible MySpace page owner, you would want to keep that page as safe as possible - for your own sake and for the sake of your visitors.

Oh yeah, well I think internet security becomes more important on certain sites but I suppose its good practice to exercise it on every site you use.

Yes certainly, if someone hacks your MySpace page you might lose a few photos, but if someone hacked your bank account it could be far worse!
