After a year of chasing him away every time he gets near her, Peppy let Petey mate with her. I walked in on them today, and was surprised to see them in the midst of it. Crazy kids.

So, I got them a nest box, and started them on a calcium supplement just in case.

Does this usually result in fertile eggs, or is it more usual that they mate and not lay eggs?

If the mating was successful, how long before she lays eggs?

Babies would be kind of cool, but I do worry about Peppy because so many birds get eggbound.

Skipperdog I had the same situation back in June. My two little birds fell in love. Sort of obsessed with eachother. I did put out a make shift box because I thought she was looking for a place to lay. She discovered it and that became her home for the next few weeks. She ended up laying seven eggs and four hatched. Cutest little things! I love the little guys and they are 3.5 months old.

However in hindsight- I think I enabled her to lay. I've been told by breeders that as long as they don't have a breeding box and are not in breeding mode she may not have layed eggs. She only layed one clutch and I removed the breeding box after the last little guy left it. She hasn't layed any more eggs. She is out of breeding mode and I have seperated mom and dad in seperate cages however, they are still sneaky. They have free fly time and they have been "busy"(lol). They used to be noisy and I knew what they were up to - but now they know the quiet method! I know they have mated several times but no sign of eggs.

Hope this helps you. Keep on researching so you can get the right information.

Thank you for your reply. I gave them a nest box, but the sudden appearance of the box seems to have quieted them down. The are afraid of it.

I'm not sure how to tell other than cere color, that the female is in breeding mode. Peppy's cere has been chocolate brown for months now, so I don't know if that means she's been receptive all this time, or if that is just her natural color.

I'll keep on the lookout for any signs of egg laying.

I think I read that it takes a week to 10 days for them to start laying eggs after mating. And then something like 18 days after she starts brooding the eggs to start hatching? Don't quote me on that tho, it's something I've read, I don't have experience with breeding smile
LOL Those crazy kids! hahaha

Coco's Mom, I kept 2 of the babies. Skippy who is in the picture is the oldest. Then Taco who looks just like his dad but shaped like his mom. When I get this account figured out I'll post more pictures.

Yes the two little ones love each other. When one flies away the other is right there with him. When it is time to go in the cage I usually have to have them together on my hand so they don't think they are missing out on something!

Taco is the boss of the cage. Has to have what the other has. The cage order as of now. Taco, then skippy. Dad (yellowbird) gets pushed around by both. However, this all changes when mom (Huey) is in the cage. She is boss!

Funny little personalities.

So funny, I only have one, so it's fun to hear about multi-budgies and their interactions.
