We have had about 2 weeks of cloudy weather and I think it is making my keets depressed. They are quiet and sleepy most of the time. I dont have a huge window to put them in front of. Do any of you notice if your keets get depressed without sunlight? I have been thinking about an avian lamp to help them get more light. Does anyone have one?

RIP Peeps

I have & use an avian lamp daily-no matter what the light outside. Sitting by the window is not enough sunlight to produce Vit D, in birds or humans. I bought it as soon as I got my first Budgie so I haven't noticed any changes in behavior due to sunlight or lack of.
My birds always get crazy happy when I turn the avian lamp on and preen alot when it is on. I use it between 1-4 hours a day.

Yes, my birds don't like cloudy days. I think they need sunlight to make vitamin D and keep their calcium levels where they should be. I take my keets outside frequently when the weather's good for it. Otherwise they get the "sun" lamp for an hour or so.

My widows are so old shocked

I bought a UV sensor to test my room to see whats really getting through and it was the same reading as outside. I do not have a avian lamp frown

I am with skipper

I just get my keet outside on the crazy nice days, and we hang out in front of the window (aka my bed, or my table) almost always. If its cloudy she does get bummed out. I have seen her do it, and seen her nap for most of a rainy day. Hell even i get like that some rainy days

New pics soon smile

Speaking of sun lamps, I was just over at www.drsfostersmith.com looking through their sale items and noticed their Avian Sun Deluxe Floor Lamp is 15% off ($35.99) until Oct 5th.
This is the lamp I have.

My birds are definitely quieter when it's raining and/or overcast... This is the full-spectrum bulb I use over Pudgie's cage; I put it in a normal "student desk" type lamp http://www.featherbrite.com/featherbrite-15w-full-spectrum-bu15.html

Thank you thank you for the tips. I am going to get a lamp on friday. I think it will help. Edgar has calcium issues so this will help him get his vitamin D.

Puds- I would sleep with them too if I didnt have to work smile

my babies get the same light that i have for my seasonal disorder (sad) up in the north, the days are getting very short now and i have the light to ensure that i get my vit d so i don't fall into a depression. we get LOTS of light in the summer, for a while it doesn't get totally dark, just like late dusk (not quite dark enough to turn on streetlights) and then lightens again. right now, the streetlights are on by 7:50-8:00. in full winter, it will be dark by about 6:30pm and not light again until close 8:00am. my light is important to me and my brat pack! (not to mention my plants!! LOL!)
