Does anyone have any experience with halogen lights? I like to have them near Sushi because they give a nice, bright, full-spectrum light which she enjoys basking in. The also provide some heat, so even if our house is cool, her corner will be a bit warmer. My concern is that she'll land on the bulb or the metal parts around them - and they get HOT. Anyone have the same problem or any creative solutions?

No ideas for you (sorry) but where do you get those? Are there ones specially made for keets? And how much do they cost? I've been thinking of getting one for Joey. Thanks smile

You can get halogen lights just about anywhere (Walmart, hardware stores, etc.), but they can be sort of expensive. Right now Sushi's in a room with no windows, so I bought her a full-spectrum florescent light at Walmart. Bulb and fixture only cost about $12, and she appears to be enjoying it.

For a heat source while in the cage does not seem to be a problem but while out of cage I always look at it like this: If there is anything that could possibly hurt the keet, I do away with it while my keet is out. we have candles and scented bowls that have hot liquid in them. I always extiguish the candles and turn out the lamps and cover the liquid bowls. Better safe then sorry! It would not take but a second for your keet to burn his tiny feet on one of those bulbs! eek

Wanted to add that one of Peteys favorite palces to hang out is on top of a lampshade by the window but I always turn the light out first as he could slip down and fall into it. It would not take but a second to burn him. I would feel soooo bad! Don't take any chances! eek

Kacey's favorite place to hang out is on a big tall wire stand we have in the Kitchen/Family Room. That area is the ceter of activity throughout the day smile She loves to be the center of attention smile

Okay thanks, I'll look for one at Wal-Mart sometime when I get a little extra cash. Will be sure to be careful with it too - thanks for the tip getlow. smile Kacey, that's really cute how Kacey hangs out on that stand you mentioned to be the center of attention! What a cutie! :p

Yeah, and when she's up there if we are watching TV or something and no one is paying attention to her, she'll fweep at the top of her lungs to get our attention. smile

Right I had a light in the office room which was shaped like a bowl on a tall stick - there was the light element in the center of the bowl. It gave great light but I always worried about a bird accidentially landing on or in the bowl and getting burnt, so I changed it out for a much safer light.

As much as we might think "oh the keet will never land there", there is always the chance that the keet will get scared by something and flop in a direction by accident, so it's best just not to have dangerous things around smile

Yup candles can be VERY dangerous because a keet is in essence a ball of feathers. Just one tiny touch of flame would cause their entire body to go up in flames, that would be bad.
