When I first got my parakeets, I kept reading that their life expectancy is about 10-15 years..last night, as I was researching info on Albino keets, I kept reading that they only love a MAX of 5 years...what the heck? They said a bird, who has regular checkups etc could possibly make it to 5 yrs, but that is really old for a keet. I hope this new info is wrong because 4-5 yrs is nothing!

Even years ago when we fed all seed diet and used gravel-n-grit in the cage, my bird lived 6! And another I had lived either 6 or 7. Unless they meant that an albino lives less time?

are you sure they aren't talking about albino keets in the wild? because i heard that albino animals live a shorter life in the wild because they are easier to spot for predators.

You have to remember that albino keets are inbread to get albinos in a consistant manner. Any time inbreeding is in play to get a certain trait there is a physical health tradeoff.

Ok, I don't know what was going on the other night, every article I looked at kept saying 5-10 years for a parakeet in general, but today, I searched "parakeet life expectancy" and the web sites all say 10-12 years. Whew, I was very upset thinking my babies only had less than 4 years left.

According to Peter Sakas (thee Avian medicine expert):

You're lucky if your budgie lives to be five.

He knew of one to live to twenty.

English budgies are sweeter in temperament, but don't live as long.

The budgies that live the longest are the "American Parakeet," but the green and yellow ones (the ones that resemble wild ones the most).

Budgerigars are "tumor factories."

This site says five to ten years is a realistic expectation, and also, like Dr. Sakas, emphasizes the tumor issue: http://www.birds-online.de/allgemein/alter_en.htm

In my opinion, BLR is absolutely right about---

Yea. Most live to 10-15. Lucky if it does live to 10.
