I just got back from our vet because we found blood on Biscuits wing this morning. He's had three blood feathers removed in three weeks and I took him to the vet last week to find out what's going on. He looked and said Biscuit looked fine.

Now, blood again this morning. We took him back the vet and the vet actually looked at Biscuit closely only to find his wing is swollen and sore. He's keeping Biscuit for the day to administer antibiotics and to put a birdie collar on him so he can't pick at himself.

So questions: has anyone ever had a birdie collar? The doc said I'd have to keep it on for 3-6 weeks. How do you make a bird comfortable with such a contraption? Should I segregate him from his cage mate? Or should I put them together as they usually are? I'm afraid if I keep Biscuit separate he'll get bored and want to pick at himself, whereas if he's with Snow, he'll be distracted.

Does anyone have any idea what could be the root cause of all these blood feather and wing infections?

Any experience with this from anyone?

Thanks

Sorry blumom, I have no idea. I do remember someone else having to use one of those collars but I don't remember who it was. I saw your post earlier and was hoping someone who'd been there done that would respond.
Oh well, at least I'll bump it up for u

thanks, kksuns. I'm so freaked out about this. I can't imagine Biscuit will be comfortable about this.

I am thinking it was Helwa who had the birdie collar (maybe for Jazzi?) I'm just not sure though.

I would ask the vet if he should be put in with his buddy or seperated. It might matter too how he acts. I would think you would want him as settled as possible.

I am being dive bombed by some birdies now. Guess they want my attention--Later all!

Ditto and I agree. Poor Biscuit. Sorry I have no idea why all the infections are happening... frown

I'm bumping this because I'm hoping someone who's had experience with bird collars for injured keets can help me out.

Hey blumom, how's Biscuit doing? Did you decide to keep him separated from Snow or are they together?

I wish I had some answers for you but I'm clueless.
Anyone else?

Geesh, 3-6 weeks with a collar? Poor little man frown Is his wing painful I wonder? Sounds like it would be. awwww

He's not a happy bird right now. He's uncomfortable, he's chewing at the collar to the extent that he seems to be pulling at his neck feathers. I have him in a separate cage from the other birds and I guess we'll all adjust.

I just hate to see him so uncomfortable.

thank you for asking.
